I don't think people trawl the internet looking for offence. I think they just trawl the internet. When they see something they have an opinion on, they give it, just like ABers. If people like Fry make dumb jokes, they can expect others to say so.
The internet (/FB/Twitter) means many more people can make their opinions known than used to be the case. It doesn't follow that more of them take offence than they used to, only that they now taking the opportunity to say so.
In this particular case, Fry has suddenly discovered that not everyone is in awe of everything he says. His response to this shock revelation: 'Will all you sanctimonious ***ers f*** the f*** off.'
Well, you too have the right to tweet stuff like that, Steve. Stay classy.
