jno; //He's at least as worthy as Sir Douglas Fairbnks Jr,..//

D.F. Jnr. did at least live in England, in fact, he was a one-time neighbour of mine in The Boltons, South Kensington.
For: "He was fighting through the civil rights movement. He was more than just a boxer, he was a leader for many people."

Against: does anyone with such outstanding credentials really need to be legitimised by an outdated anachronism like the royal family.

Take your pick.
Thousands signed a petition....

Obviously a lot of people's opinions were canvassed ;)
No why should he?

If there is one going spare give it to our own Frank Bruno.

Baldric, //Naomi, sorry about jumping the gun,//

Not at all. I'm grateful. :o)
No, he should not be awarded an honorary knighthood, and nor should any sportsman - British or not - unless they've done something else remarkable.
In fact, I think we should get rid of the whole system. I read Naomi's link, and the list of rules of what foreign honorary Knights and dames may call themselves, and in what circumstances, is laughable. It's like reading something from the Dark Ages.
Cloverjo........;-)......"Dark Ages?"

Many of us on AB ARE from the Dark Ages.......including me and didn't consider that era too bad.
Many feel that these present times represent the Dark Ages.
Haha, sqad. You could be right, there. :)
Cloverjo......I agree, I cannot see the point of Sir. Mohamed Ali.

Foreigners can be knighted - the American secretary of state during the falklands got one - they have their own rules about accepting foreign honours.

Nelson who was neither a knight nor an american wore the sultan's whatever ( crescent with girlies-slave oakleaves ) without the permission of his sovereign - dear dear but was known to be vane as well as a battle winner.

now controlled by statute ( wear foreign honours without permission and you DIE ! Act )

and SO......Mohd Ali couild join the long line of vegetables we are currently giving honours to

ter daaah ! [ he is a punchie by the way - Parkinsons is a cover story - and his advice was "Marmz dont let your kids into the ring."

Sqad

you couldnt see the point of Sir Sqad - you pinko wet lib you

but Mrs Sqad could !
^^^^ LOL....naaah!...Mrs sqad likes quality rather than quantity (so she says!)
I can tell you sqaddie as you tap tap tap
she is in the bedroom ( sorry boo-dwar) trying on a nice hat in her mirror and saying to herself

Lady Sqad ! yes I deserve that at least !
^^LOL.....
Geldof got one for trying to save a continent from starving to death
As far as I am aware (and my knowledge is limited to say the least) Mr Ali was a racist who beat people unconscious for a living and seemed to glory in it
So you could say I am not a fan and would be more inclined to offer a prison sentence than a knighthood
No...

Why on earth should we award somebody who refused to fight for his country..see the irony !?
I think Ric.ror has a point; he was an unconscionable racist, he didn't believe in integration, he said 'when I look around I see the bluebirds hang out with only bluebirds, and the same goes for the blackbirds too' (or words to that effect)
Were he 100% compos mentis I think he would tell them where to stuff their gong.

If I said I was against interracial marriage I would be labelled a racist by the same posters on here that think Ali should get a knighthood ...
No.
