...I wouldn't be surprised.

But I can't recall ever seeing this at a rugby match before:

A one-off incident, surely?

To be fair, sp, football players fighting with fans is quite a rarity. You make it sound like the norm.
I can think of Eric Cantona ... Please give me other examples of players attacking fans.
Australian winger Justin Carney and centre Junior S’au were seen involved in heated exchanges at the Salford fans' end of the ground. It is understood the two players in particular were concerned for the welfare of their families, who were sitting close to where the alleged incident took place.
That's the only incident that sprang to my mind, too, Talbot. There have, of course, been many 'confrontations' and coin-throwing incidents, but that's not what is being suggested.
Doubtless they were 'right wing thugs' intent on ruining a family day out.
Fan violence and gangs weren't uncommon some years back, not the norm but incidents most footballing weekends. But less player/fan clashes.

Rugby fans are traditionally better behaved though. Maybe changing times, with rugby getting more fashionable among the alpha male spectator types ?

Didn't the late Brian Clough tangle with some spectators who ran on to the pitch?
Yes, ag, he slapped one around the head. Kissed him better a few days later - would rather have had another slap.
Cough was a manager not a player when he totally embarrassed himself. (Possibly he was still drunk)
He slapped 3 fans if my memory serves me right
^^
Yeah, but he only kissed the good looking one:-)

Sorry - I should have been clearer. I was referring to the mass brawl that broke out in the terraces, prior to the players intervening.

Isn't that kind of thing fairly rare amongst rugby fans?

There isn't the 'tradition' of fighting amongst rugby (or cricket) fan - compared to football.
Hahahaha, then, oh dear.
Not a patch on the fights that break out in those migrant camps.

A one of incident, surely?

No, you are wrong.
SP...Rugby is often described as a sport, played by gentlemen, with funny shaped balls.

A rare event I would agree, rather than a one-off.
yes.... i can see a girl having her hair pulled
( some of the girl fans are real fighters I can tell you )

and another having his throat compressed by a man with tatooed arms

where did you say this occurred ? and which number bus route

no but seriously - I am saddened to see it is Salford ( =Manch to you and I )
again and you know as usual people should be behaving better in public

Mikey isnt it a sport of cads played by gentlemen ?
clearly not up ' t' North
You may be right PP !
This is Rugby League, totally different to Union with which most are familiar.

Rugby league does not attract the brightest of people.
