Since canal vessels have to be low enough to go under the bridges, just have cycle tracks suspended above the canals, made of glass so that bargees aren't deprived of their right to sunshine.

Retro, I'll have you know that I'm not in the "Frozen North". I live further south than all of you lot. I'm at the same latitude as Marseilles: 73 degrees North; however, that's sometimes hard to believe:)

As kids, we used to refer to the local canal as "the cut".

Ban cycling.....mostly seem to be ridden by people who have no idea of abiding by the law...eg on pavements, through red traffic lights etc

My niece (born and raised in Ontario) went to University in Canada. I say it was Quebec but the memsahib says no. Any how you will recognise it being such a small country.
Her halls of residence ,or whatever called in Canada ,was some way from the campus. By coincidence there was a canal running by her residence that ran by the campus so,in Winter, she ice skated down the canal to her lectures. The memsahib has just said she would put her last rupee on it being Carleton University in Ottawa. I am sure you must know it. :-)
