I would have thought that the Feminists would be fighting to stop this kind of event.

A fantastic British tradition.

I went to Ladies Day last year as a guest of someone who is a big shot in the racing world, and it was absolutely hilarious.

I don't see any need to kill off this excellent tradition.
What would dave50 have to write about if they didn't have one? :-)
Possibly, but it's a good excuse to dress-up! Elder daughter has done rather well in her work this year, is in the company's Top 10 Club (never got anything like this when I was teaching :( ) and has just been told they will be treated to all-expenses-paid day at Royal Ascot as a reward. I promise you (with reference to earlier post) that she will look very elegant - mind you, the outfit will cost a fortune!

'Ladies Day' is really about having a bit of a party and looking as good as you can. Even I dressed up for York races last year, flowing black trousers, silk blouse, pearls, black drape fastened with pearl brooch - and I spend most of my life in jeans. :)

Did you go for a plunging neck line or chose to wear a thigh flashing skirt?
Well I would ban horse racing all together or massively overhaul it because of the suffering it causes to horses....but if people want to dress up and party anywhere then why not?
Surely a well starched dickie, top hat, and tails , for the well dressed race-goer.
Can you imagine the uproar if someone mentioned a Men's Day.
Actually, whiskeryron, I'd go along with a 'Men's Day' when the chaps would dress-up to the nines and display their sense of style. :)
Sandy, don't forget the spats, and the size 18 hunter-style pocket watch with a flamboyantly displayed fob-chain.

What a ridiculous question.

Full length gown, Spanx and a fascinator thank you very much.

Seriously though...one thing about many of these women who dress 'inappropriately' at Aintree...every single one of them (that we got chatting with) were great women. Salt of the Earth types.

I assumed it must be a Northern thing. It's a bit of a generalisation, but I have met very few women from up north who were anything less than fantastic.
Modesty forbids me to comment, sp.
woof at 16:47 - well said you !

But then they'd stop breeding them.

I hate horse racing with a passion but probably for different reasons.

My dad was a gambling addict. Lovely lovely man but it bought a few years of misery. Horses racing was his thing. He got beat to within an inch of his life over a gambling debt.

Yeah it is. He redeemed himself though and paid every penny back. Heartbreaking.
