Because it would seem recent governments appear to lack former military men and women and treat those that serve them with contempt.
Those military personnel who made use of these translators knew and appreciate their worth.
The 'Eton Rifles' contingent do not value or appreciate anyone unless it is to their advantage.

I first became aware of this story through the parallel one running in the US, where Interpreters also face a huge struggle to pass through immigration control. It's completely incomprehensible why this should be. But it does fit an unfortunate pattern. Tighter immigration controls often end up hitting the people you *want* to see coming into the country -- after all, such people also have a general respect for the law -- while illegal immigrants and people traffickers will just ignore whatever regulations you have in place.

Regardless of the bigger picture, though, the treatment of Afghan interpreters by the US and UK (and possibly other countries too, although to date I'm not aware of this -- a quick google search suggests France might be equally culpable) has been disgraceful, or even shameful.
