With the UK threat level increase a few years ago has the description "suspicious" got a different perception, more akin to paranoia perhaps?

Whilst it is better to be safe than sorry, it doesn't look like there was any real reason to suspect it. I think they panicked.

Lots of people chance parking on double yellow lines and leave 2L bottles on show containing lemonade or other liquid.

Grounds for suspicion? Not convinced!

Had this vehicle been a bomb (and with a container of possible accelerant on view it was a reasonable suspicion) and had it exploded, there would have been a rash of questions on here asking why the Police had not dealt with it before it could explode.

It clearly wasn't 2 litres of coke though, it looked to me like 10 litres of questionable liquid.

You seem to be forgetting the heightened security status, the recent threat from Irish factions. The Police would have been aware of any reports on the Police National Computer, perhaps the gentlemans name would have set alarm bells ringing or possibly it was shown as 'no current keeper'.
To suggest that any unattended car with a liquid container on board will be blown up is mischievous.

The Telegraph says there were what looked like petrol containers in the car.
That was a well known tactic for car bombs during the 'IRA years'.
Parked in a place where it would have caused damage to a TV studio, Yes they were right to blow it up.
