Indeed. Financially the UK/Scotland issue is the reverse of the EU/UK issue.

I'm unsure letting the whole UK vote in the break up referendum would ensure a split. I think changes would be useful but if the SNP can keep their destructive goals in the background then the UK is much better off with Scotland. I'd even invite Eire to reconsider their unfortunate decision to break away. A pair of islands seem a reasonable single national unit.

Financially perhaps, but politically they are the same basic principle. If the Scottish people as a whole want to leave the UK that should be up to them, not the rest of the UK.

I agree. We would all be affected by a split, so we should all vote on the issue. Many, many Brits are, like me, half-Scottish as well.

It should be a two stage affair. Scotland alone should vote, then if the vote is Independence the rest of us should vote as to whether to allow them. This of course will be a mere formality.

I note this thread already has a difference of opinion about whether Scotland benefits the UK or benefits *from* the UK.

The sole reason for the Union was to prevent the restoration of the House of Stuart in Scotland and the possible alliance with France. That reason no longer exists.
