altho some of the dialog is pretty trenchant - "I (Gove) watched him over the last few days and he hasnt stepped up the mark"

Definitely 'yes'. I have a theory (shades of Monty Python) which would take rather too long to explain fully at the moment. But I think that Boris is basically a 'remainer' and chancing his luck on a narrow 'Brexit'(or even a strong 'Brexit' vote) to force the EU into offering better terms. He would emerge a hero, but still committed, privately, to remaining and would become P.M. and achieve this by devious means. I reckon that Gove (or Mrs. Gove) got on to this and threatened to expose him (B) which would have damned him forever. So, better to live to fight another day. That's a very brief resume. :) (Shades of Tudor politics!)

But then I rethought it, and you know what - your theory makes sense.
When Gove made that statement on the BBC News report earlier, I couldn't work out what he might be referring to. I assumed it must be some really nasty skeletons in his closet. But then I couldn't work out what kind of skeleton would allow him to become London Mayor, but not lead the Tories.
If Gove had evidence that Johnson was in fact, a Remainer - that would blow him to pieces.
It's a much better theory than what has been put forward by some commentators - the Telegraph article thing:

- Boris IS a Remainer and only joined the Leave camp to usurp Cameron in a leadership contest to Cameron in the Autumn on the assumption that Brexit would narrowly lose.
- That blew up in Boris' face with brexit winning and Cameron resigning. Suddenly the job of being the next Prime Minister became less appealing.
- The new PM has a choice of going with Brexit and being the man who makes this country into an economical basket case or being the man who ignores the Referendum and becomes very unpopular.
- Boris does not like being unpopular and hated, so he decided to settle for becoming the next Prime Minister after the next one.
- Boris has been patient and played the long game in his ambition to be PM, so he has resigned himeself to now not being the right time.
- Gove could not get reassurances off of Boris that he supported full Brexit, so Gove has gone it alone.

I agree with Gromit; but if his Tory colleagues think of him as Boris the Bottler, he may never get the job he seeks and for which he gave up the London mayoralty (though he might not have won that again). I don't think he has as many friends in Parliament as is supposed - a bit like Heseltine in his day: lots of fans in the country hanging on his every word, but not quite enough at the office. Except that Heseltine actually achieved things inside and outside politics.

I'm not a Tory voter, the choices that they've got to be next leader look weak, May no way, she cannot lead the negotiations on Brexit, Gove, dear oh dear, this is the man who stitched up the teachers, the others I've heard little about! The Labour party is in even a worse state, I cannot see them winning anything for years and years, there is no stand out candidate. The whole lot of them are on the rocky road to ruin! Up until a couple of years ago I was Labour through and through, as were my mum and dad, Milliband turned me off them and I cannot see me going back anytime soon! Looks like it'll be UKIP for me again.
I don't believe for a moment that the Labour situation had anything to do with the Johnson/Gove thing.
I think most of us believe that there has to have been more behind the scenes to cause the changes in the Tory leadership race. I read these conspiracy theories with interest but accept that they are all guesses.
As folk say, both major parties are all over the shop. And elsewhere individuals are trying to take advantage of the situation for their own agendas. Not a good situation. The sooner sanity breaks out, the better.

The news of this fiasco broke when I was up in Town at a meeting, and I didn't realise anything had happened until I got back to Paddington, where everybody seem to be talking about it.
I am still unsure why Boris has done an abrupt U turn here. He was always going to have to fight for the Leadership, so I really can't see why he didn't persevere.
Everything he has done since he came back into Parliament has been aimed at Number Ten, and whatever else Boris is, he is not a quitter.
Now that his mate old Gove has turned on him and plunged a dagger into his back, he should have stood his ground. This is his best opportunity to get his hands on the Tory Crown, and Boris has beggered it up big time.
