I think they'll struggle. Jeremy will get enough MPs to stand in any new contest and would re win. Should the Blairites break away and form a new party?

There is a place for a new party, 'The New Democrats'. It would be some lefty Tories, Blairite Labour and the remaining dregs of the Liberals.

In politics, timing is crucial (ask Boris).
Because the SDP failed 30 years ago, does not mean it will fail now. Different circumstances, different sets of problems to overcome, different battles.
There needs to be a left of centre opposition, and there isn't one now. So something has to fill the vacuum.

I think I agree with Gromit. One cannot just point to a previous failure and say that history will repeat itself, especially when the circumstances are totaaly different.
Not sure about the 'New Democrats', what would they call themselves in 20 years time?
Personally I would not be surprised if Corbyn stepped down once he had savaged Blair (and stuck him in jail where he belongs) over the Chilcott enquiry. That's assuming it si not a complete whitewash. Which it probably is on reflection.
