They will probably get off with a warning or a few hours community work, but the courts have got to start getting tough!!!!!

As always, pointless acts of violence create a debate in which people try to reason why the perpetrators have behaved as they have. And thereby hangs the problem. You cannot attribute rational thought processes to people who behave in this way. Questions like "What were they thinking?" in terms of consequences, for the victims and potentially themselves...

Baz..it's a criminal act and they should be punished as harshly as possible. I'm just questioning their intent.
now we are getting somewhere, so its not stupid is it ?

lets hope the court doesnt see it as just a an act of stupidity but as the crime it is and hands out a proper sentence...some hope
I was nearly hit by a half-brick thrown at me by a youth in the 90's followed by a slurred "I hate you" and more garbled nonsense. I imagine alcohol was involved and also in this case.
ummmm

/// Retro...my uncle, now 65, was caught joyriding in his youth. He's one of the nicest people. His punishment....he was made to join the army! ///

/// He's not a thug, or a criminal, he did something stupid, and he paid the price. ///

Then perhaps that is the answer, bring back National Service.

/// The brick/stone seemed to go through the left, front side window of the taxi, then hit the lady, and out of the window next to her. ///

/// Do you think this could have been racist, as I thought the driver sounded a bit Asian, and it might have been intended for him? ///

Blimey had it have been, then this thread would have took on an entirely different slant, there would have been cries from some of "lynch the little racist thugs".
Retrocop called for them to swing on page one, AOG.
Racist ? Oh please don't bring racism I to this thread ;:(

What "little racist thugs"? I must have missed that.
A few points....Some of which have been raised already since I last replied.

//What Is Wrong With Youths Today.......//

It isn't new however horrible it is, so that makes no sense.

//They will probably get off with a warning or a few hours community work, but the courts have got to start getting tough!!!!! //

I certainly hope they are dealt with severely for this horrific and potentially lethal attack and you are mistaken in your guess.

Did they fail to realise the severity of their actions? Without knowing more about them and any past they have, none of us know.

Parents to blame? Answer as above really without knowing the parents and how these youths were raised.

Hanging? - No.

A friend was hospitalised in the 1980s following a coping stone thrown through his windscreen on a motorway from a bridge by a 17 year old - so not new.

I pray the couple and the driver recover well from both the injuries and the huge shock.

A mere 30 odd years, it may not be new to you, but it is to me, no motorway bridges in my day.
Many windows of buses, cars, taxis were smashed here at the height of the troubles.

One friend in particular - sitting on a bus coming home from work - window was smashed - her face was very badly scarred and I don't think she ever got over the shock and she would have been only in her twenties at the time.
Horrible JJ, but you see that equates to 'new' - youths of today eh?
Is there a difference between calling for these youngsters to swing and your hypothetical 'little racist thugs' to swing?
"Did they fail to realise the severity of their actions? Without knowing more about them and any past they have, none of us know.
"
youre kidding right !?...i dont give a toss about them or their past, ditto if they thought about the consequences or not....its now that matters and they found a brick and hurled it through the window of a taxi...

they need dealing with and severely so that if the thought ever crops up in their tiny minds again theyll soon forget it

i suppose you wanna give them a big group hug and send them on a nice holiday in the sun somewhere and talk about what theyve done blah blah..

apart from any other punishment they may or may not get, they should be made to have a long hard stare at the pic of that poor woman every night before they go to bed and soon as they wake up
Hug ?? How ridiculous - who mentioned that?

//I certainly hope they are dealt with severely for this horrific and potentially lethal attack//
As always, pointless acts of violence create a debate in which people try to reason why the perpetrators have behaved as they have.

And thereby hangs the problem.

You cannot attribute rational thought processes to people who behave in this way.

Questions like "What were they thinking?" in terms of consequences, for the victims and potentially themselves are irrelevant because they weren't thinking - at all.

An action like this is created by an instant impulse, with no thought or reasoning behind it. How could there be? A second's thought would prevent the act for all the reasons that rational thought provides - potential fatality, criminal proceedings, prison, and so on.

That is why notions like hanging and birching as 'deterrents' are redundant.

In order to appreciate that there is a potential serious punishment for your actions, you need to be thinking through your actions before you carry them out - and in cases like this, that simply does not happen.

No-one commits a punishable crime with the thought in mind that the punishment will be visited on them personally - that means that reasoning and considering and looking ahead are all in play, and of course, they are not, none of them.

Punishment should be meted out, but in a way that genuinely informs the culprits of what the punishment is about - otherwise it will fail in its intention, which is to make them consider what they have done, regret it, and resolve not to repeat the experience.

Concepts like hanging and birching and similar are simply knee-jerk reactions where instant violent revenge feels appropriate in order to assuage feelings of shock and abhorrence. They are completely understandable human reactions from rational minds to irrational savage actions - but they are not appropriate.

Our laws are what make us civilised - and a proper judicial process and appropriate punishment must be completed - and further violence, albeit state sanctioned - has no place there.
Bring in the birch. If they cant swing then a goog public flogging may send out the right message.
Parents of these youths will suffer when their sons are unemployed due to criminal convictions. Maybe then they will rue their neglect.
//Our laws are what make us civilised //

I suspect that the absence of appropriate punishment endorses incivility.
Bless you Andy. There are certain people that do evil things intentionally because they are in fact evil. Malicious, malevolent and intent upon harm.
EVIL....get it?
