What would you do if you were an Asian GP faced with a patient demanding treatment from a white doctor?

If it were me, and my practice were in London, I would be tempted to refer them to a white locum based in the Isle of Skye.

Any other suggestions?

I'd just tell him he was at liberty to find one who would treat him.

I'd probably suggest that he wasn't unwell enough to see a doctor at all if he was that choosy.

I would advise him that I am trained and qualified to treat him - if he wishes to challenge my professional standing, he is welcome to do so, but if he wishes to challenge my ethnicity, then I am unable to help him further, and I would ask him to leave my surgery.

If I'm ill I want to see a Doctor, I don't really care what Colour/Religion they are, I need fixing.
My Wife is a long term NHS Professional (recently retired) and at the moment we have as a guest a Doctor who is a long term friend of ours, (and not a figment of my imagination or as some have suggested 'madness') who is changing her work base from London area to East Kent, and is staying with us while she sees how things work out. She is British Indian, should we be concerned, she seems to be very nice

Just wondering...can patients actually demand to be treated by a GP of a predetermined ethnicity?

I can understand a patient wishing to see a male or female GP depending on the specifics of the illness...but can you really walk in and demand a white (or black, or Asian) doctor?

My GP practice has 26 doctors half of whom are Asian and I am always happy to be treated by any of them.

There's long standing abuse within all aspects of health care from all sides and to all who work in it.

It's a very hard nut to crack, as so often the people trying to help those who are being abusive have to do their best and move on to the next patient.

Signs at reception desks cut little ice.

When booking appointments/test etc anyone can ask for either the GP of their choice at a practice or a Doctor of their own sex - also they can request the surgery to supply a chaperone if they have no one to accompany them.

Certain of these requests may mean a slightly longer wait for your appointment.

That goes across the board.
