Can you spot the difference?

// Police arrest 900 Syrians in England and Wales for crimes including rape and child abuse //

And

// In England and Wales the majority of offences that Syrians were arrested for were immigration violations, but there were other serious crimes. //
Gromit

Always the apologist, well to certain groups at least.

Matters no about the few rapes and child abuses, hey!! the majority were for immigration violations.

It's a wonder the police wasted their time dealing with such trivialities.
I don't think that the difference matters; it's the similarity: Both quotes mention arrested syrians.
the police don't waste their time with immigration violations - they hand the miscreants to the UK border agency, who deal with them most sternly and send them to east croydon.
This also from the Sun's link:

/// Our revelation comes after Northumbria Police were last month accused of a cover-up over an alleged attack by Syrians on two teenage girls in Newcastle. ///

/// One of the suspects was being followed by the BBC for a report on how his family had settled in the UK. ///

/// In Northumbria, the force admitted that last year – the latest available figures – they arrested a total of 16 Syrians. ///

/// This tally of arrests included two alleged sex offences, six claims of violence assaults and three of public disorder. ///

/// In London, 238 arrested included two for rape, three for death threats and seven for sex offences. ///

/// And Nottinghamshire cops nicked one for sexual activity with an underage girl. ///

Awaits for Gromit to state, "yes but what about all those crimes committed by Brits"?

I don't think Gromit is being an apologist. He has not said we shouldn't be concerned. He is just pointing out that the title is carefully worded to sensationalise..

It's a bit like saying 100 top soccer players have contracts ended for reasons including rape and grooming- when, apart from Evans and Johnson, the other 98 were for reasons such as injury, breach of rules, no longer good enough
Yes, but what about all those crimes committed by non-Syrians.
To be meaningful the figures need to be compared with other groups. If that highlight a problem with Syrians then yes it's a problem
fiction-factory

/// If that highlight a problem with Syrians then yes it's a problem ///

Just try asking the victims, if it is a problem with the Syrians?

Would they likely say, "oh no anyone could have raped me"?
I am not an apologist for Syrian criminals. Those successfully prosecuted deserve everything they get.

The Sun's report mentions 10 sex offenses and states that the majority of the arrests were for immigration violations. So the headline that 900 were arrested for rape, death threats and child abuse is a deliberate attempt to mislead.

By pointing out the deception I am not condoning any criminality, I am just asserting that I don't like to be lied to.
Gromit

/// So the headline that 900 were arrested for rape, death threats and child abuse is a deliberate attempt to mislead. ///

No, if anyone is lying or deliberately attempting to mislead, then you should look closer to home.

This is what the Sun's headline actually says:

*** Hundreds of Syrians in UK arrested over string of offences including rape and child abuse ***

"Strings of offences 'including' rape and child abuse".

Got it?

*** Hundreds of Syrians in UK arrested over string of offences including rape and child abuse ***
The above words are *highlighting* rape and child abuse. They are *not* telling us what the actual figures are. Is it 2 out of 900....or 20...or 200?
So far I only see the case of four men mentioned in the link.
AOG,

I meant to say Express, not the Sun.

The reports original title was
// Police arrest 900 Syrians in England and Wales for rape, death threats and child abuse //
but it has been changed. Presumably because someone realised it was a lie

The original title can be seen in its url

and this link to the story.

I often wonder what people used to do on a Sunday afternoon, before the computer and internet?

Sorry AOG not sure why but when I posted your post on this nor the "footballer" post were showing on my PC...strange
//I am not an apologist for Syrian criminals. Those successfully prosecuted deserve everything they get. //

What about those "not successfully" prosecuted? Will they be subject to the approbation meted out to the victims of say the Yew Tree "investigations. We aren't even told the are being prosecuted, never mind named on the six o clock news, after being accused, with a full BBC news team and outside broadcast complete with blue and white taped areas and an hourly update for weeks on end.
