Honestly, if there is to be fracking locally then I think the money should be paid to individual householders and not passed to councils to decide what they think is best.....also I don’t think there should be any kind of means test on it as is implicated in that article...if its to compensate people affected by fracking then that should be the only criterion.

I don’t believe “bribes” (or compensation payments, call them what you will) should be paid at all, either to individuals or local authorities.
The country needs a secure energy supply. Given that we’ve given up on the vast reserves of coal upon which the nation still sits an alternative (unreliant on the wind blowing, the sun shining or the co-operation of foreign governments) needs to be secured. Only if householders are directly affected (e.g their house needs to be demolished to make way for a fracking well) should compensation be paid. This is yet another major project the government needs to get on and do rather than talk about (others that spring to mind are Brexit, runway expansion and Hinkley Point – either scrap it in favour of an alternative or build it). There is far too much prevarication when action is needed.

//but only nuclear can replace coal and gas. //
Wrong. We have enough coal and gas reserves for 100 years energy supplies including electrickery generation. The new methods with the carbon scrub systems are a damn site more "green" than noo clear plants. Factor in the concrete and safety systems req, but don't forget the clean ups required when noo clear plants are decommissioned. By the time coal and shale gas are finished fusion will be viable. Just think we have Mrs Thatcher to thank for preserving our coal suppliers rather than squandering them on a socialist vanity, virtue, programme. (^_*)

///Coal is a solid fossil fuel with global reserves of over 100 years.///

Togo...I agree with you that we have reserves of coal left...whether we can use it to safely generate electricity from I will leave to the experts.
But I hope some way can be found to do it economically. It seems daft not to use a great national resource like that.
My comment of drivel, however, was your assertion that Margaret Thatcher closed down our coal mining industry, to "preserve our coal suppliers rather than squandering them on a socialist vanity, virtue, programme"
I have heard many reasons from right-wingers on AB as to why we no longer have a coal mining industry, but that one is new to me !
