Ludwig - //// I do not scoff at those who think that simply saying 'We can't negotiate...' as an excuse to carry on failing and killing people is the way forward //

That sounds a bit like scoffing. //

It's an example - if it strikes a chord with the superior ones, then it has done its job.
ISIS isn't a definable group it is an ideology, the objectives of that ideology are the same now as has existed for over a millennia, viz, the total eradication of Jews, Christians and everyone (including even other Muslims who happen not to be Sunni) , and the formation of a world-order based their mediaeval beliefs and lies.
You cannot negotiate with jihadism any more than you can negotiate with any other concept; Communism, Capitalism or whatever.

They would beg to differ - and maybe looking at things from their perspective would be a good start.

If you want to try and reach a solution to a problem, you need to start looking for common ground - humanity in this case.

Starting from a position where you don't recognise the legitimacy of the other side's organisation is not really likely to set them off in a mood to listen to what you are trying to say.
andy-hughes, //They would beg to differ //

Really? What would they say then?
I don't think it would be morally right to negotiate with criminals of this magnitude even if it were possible, which it obviously isn't.

naomi can you and I class ourselves amongst the "superior ones"?
More Labour claptrap... The dawn of a new error.
Next thing you know, Smith would suggest talking to Kim Jong Un, another despotic leader that talking to is a waste of time!
//The dawn of a new error. //

was that a deliberate malapropism?
Ludwig - //I don't think it would be morally right to negotiate with criminals of this magnitude even if it were possible, which it obviously isn't. //

Your stance is a common one - it was the default position of Margaret Thatcher with the IRA.

But because some people overcame their hatred and antipathy enough to negotiate, we have peace in Northern Ireland today.

Wrinkling your nose and saying ugh isn't going to cut it.

..sounds like more scoffing.

Unintentional, but you could be right.

I stand by my point, but could have expressed it better.

Apologies.
I don't think you can compare the IRA with ISIS by the way. It's a whole different thing.

No negotiating with these dark age savages. Stupid man !
I'd still like to know what Owen Smith and andy-hughes think should be negotiated.
Ludwig - //I don't think you can compare the IRA with ISIS by the way. It's a whole different thing. //

I am not comparing the IRA and ISIS.

I am pointing out the identical attitude towards both - "We don't negotiate with terrorists' is word-for-word the same approach.

Negotiation did take place - with a positive result - there is a lesson to be learned there.
andy-hughes, What do you suggest we attempt to negotiate?
