further proof of the EU's ingrained anti Britishness.

that's one way of looking at it. For the purposes of the Olympics, Wales doesn't exist. For the purposes of the World Cup at football or rugby, it does. People can make up these tables any way they want.
Webbo...I keep getting told on here that the majority of people in Britain voted to leave the EU ( not me ), so isn't this inevitable ?

We can't have our cake and eat it too can we ?
Well that's the EU Medal Tracker.

Look at a proper one...

Wales is legally part of England and has been since 1536.
Jack....I wouldn't say that in any Pub this side of the Severn Bridge !

Ahh bless em the usual childish tantrum. Whats mine is mine and whats yours is errr...... mine.

it's a very good question, but it's been asked a lot and there's no real answer except "we can't be bothered changing". I think Team UK would be a perfectly reasonable name and much more accurate (though I gather the Northern Irish can also decide to be in the Republic's team if they want).

Apart from that you've just underlined my point. All these countries exist when it suits them, or merge to form different countries when it suits them. Can you imagine California sending a separate team from the rest of the USA?
Your are right, divebuddy. Also, to call Wales a principality is incorrect. A principality is a country whose head of state has the title of prince. The Prince of Wales is not the head of state, the Queen is.

Mikey I delight in pointing out that Wales is indeed a principality. I also insist that if they ever do indeed gain full independence that the English will expect to be paid in full at todays values for the lovely castles that we built for them. Which incidentally they have let fall into disrepair whilst claiming them as their own and making squillions of quid from tourism. That always causes consternation when the pseudo Welsh get up a head of steam.

Mikey, we and I did vote to leave, GB has nothing to do with the rest of the European countries in the olympics, and never will be, we are Great Britain, not the eu.

Dave.
Togo...not sure why you have decided to be offensive.

Wales has never been a sovereign nation, but it has played its part in the huge medal haul in Rio, and we are very proud of that indeed.

And there is no popular movement for independence from England and never has been.

Your remarks about castles, while probably tongue in cheek, was still childish.

dave...on that we are in complete agreement !

Britain should be extremely proud of our achievements in Rio....we have won a huge haul of medals, out of all proportion to the size of our population.

We have also been a success over a wide range of different sports....again, something we should be proud of.
To get back to the topic. The EU total gives an idea of what could be achieved by a 'United States of Europe'
I know a federal Europe is not an idea many in the UK welcome, but I am sure that individual states of America held similar views in the past.
Shh. Bydd y dreigiau yn cysgu.
Not for much longer if the EU has its way. That's at the heart of why the 'Leave' vote prevailed. Besides - they haven't placed Yorkshire in the table!!!!! (OK, I'm in my bunker now!)
