/// Foreign Office advice to women travelling in India suggests they 'respect local dress codes and customs and avoid isolated areas, including beaches, when alone at any time of day'. ///

Wrap up girls, you know it makes sense.

It's India not the UK. They are fully entitled to do whatever they like.

If we, the West, don't like it then tough - don't go there.

Gosh, that's horrible. What do they call "short" skirts. All of my dresses are knee length. Would I have to buy a load of maxi dresses? And would that stop me being raped, anyway? I don't think I'll go there to find out.
All, kindly given, sensible advice. What's the problem?
The advice is sensible. The culture - in general, Indian males - is not.
Cloverjo; Perhaps you shouldn't be so smug.
'Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour
Nearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year
1 in 5 women aged 16 - 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16
Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police
Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence
These figures come from An Overview of Sexual Offending in England and Wales, the first ever joint official statistics bulletin on sexual violence released by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Home Office in January 2013.'

I was unaware that Cloverjo was being smug. That said, how do the figures you give compare with figures for India, which is, I believe, the subject of the OP?

/// Why the epithet 'Western'? What about all the other tourists or do they not count? ///

Because India's tourism minister aimed it at Western women.

*** He added: 'For their own safety, women foreign tourists should not wear short dresses and skirts... Indian culture is different from the western.' ***

Know many Eastern women tourists that wear short skirts and dresses do you?

The population of India is 1.25 billion, England and Wales 56 million.

I sensed complacency in the assertion that there was something intrinsically different about Indian males as opposed to the resident males of the UK.

/// Well!!!
We certainly wouldn't want women from other cultures being told what they ought to wear when in a foreign country, would we? ///

The difference being is the fact that we get pulled over the coals if we dare suggest such things, can one imagine our tourist minister advising other cultures about their dress sense?

/// It's stuff you have to take into account if you ever go to any of these places. ///

Yes but the problem is, 'these places' are coming near to us, well at least this type of culture is.

/// I sensed complacency in the assertion that there was something intrinsically different about Indian males as opposed to the resident males of the UK. ///

And how many resident Indian males are in the UK?
@ AOG

Our tourist minister would probably be aware of this so wouldn't dare:

'Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked
two moons in his moccasins.'

~ Indian Proverb
AOG //And how many resident Indian males are in the UK?//

What do you mean by Indian?
agc; I think that 'Indian proverb' comes from what we now call native American. :0)
I'm sorry, I couldn't concentrate on the posts following Khandro's mention of my being smug on this matter.
It horrifies me and I worry about what happens to women and girls, and men too, all over the planet.

Please don't accused me of something like this, Khandro.
Khandro! I am going to give you a dressing down!

AOG //And how many resident Indian males are in the UK?//

/// What do you mean by Indian ///

Males who come from or follow the culture of the Indian sub continent.
aog; //Males who come from or follow the culture of the Indian sub continent. /

If you include Pakistanis and Bangladeshis in your definition of 'Indians', you are going to get in one a helluva mess.

cloverjo; I'm now not clear what you meant by "The advice is sensible. The culture - in general, Indian males - is not "
I take it you meant, as I said above, there was something intrinsically different about Indian males as opposed to the resident males of the UK.
If you didn't mean that then I apologise. What did you mean?
