Work permits are ok provided the employer proves the wage & conditions offered are suitable that there is no reason an unemployed UK person can reasonably reject them, and the job position has been available to all the job seekers the government has already sent to apply, for a reasonable length of time. We don't need employers bypassing the UK national market be bringing in foreign workforce at lower wages and less than acceptable conditions.

Hi tech companies will no longer be able to recruit the best coders, so they will fail or re-locate to croatia or some such.
The argiculture industry will have to pay decent wages if there isn't a cheap pool of foreign Labour, so prices will rise and exports will fall (because the produce is dearer).

By the way, from my experience in Cornwall, the farmers pay exactly the same wages to all their workers, irrespective of where they come from.
The problem is that they can't attract a pool of workers from our indigenous unemployed dole-bludger population, because they have no need to work. They can have a very profitable existence by remaining on the dole for their whole lives.

"How would you do it ttt? " - well I tend to favour the points system, yes mikey originally it was to encourage immigration but it has now been adjusted so that only people Australia need get in. I suppose the US working visa system is one way, though really I was looking for ideas as I don't have strong views on this except to limit migration to those we need. We don't want to fill up with more scroungers, we have enough home grown ones as it is.

" - and thus the immigrants true damage is exposed, if there was no one to do the work for 2 bob a week then the employers would have to raise the wages and, who knows may even attract some home grown WSS from their xboxes. So reduce benefits and immigrants, employers will have to increase wages, voila, WSS snatched from their scrounging existence.
You seem to think there is a vast pool of WSS as you call them. There isn't. Well not in enough numbers to replace the immigrants anyway.
The long term unemployed are either young people, who don't bother signing on because the hassle is not worth it for £71 (their parents keep them). Or the old who cannot do the physical work.

Gromit...I wouldn't be so sure about the profile of dole-bludgers.
...I know many, and come across many, that are in their late 20's onwards, with families, who have never worked. The benefit system isn't robust enough to weed these people out and make them work.
But the work needs to be done and its mostly being done by immigrants....after all that is why they are here in the first place....for work. As long as we continue to allow our own unemployed to carry on claiming benefits, paid for by the taxes paid by the rest of us, and never work or contribute, we will need immigration.
