It comes down to the point I made yesterday on the thread about the seriously tattooed gentleman who was moved out of 'public view'.
Society is far more accepting of tattoos now than it was, but this is a relatively new change.
There are still large numbers of people who are in charge of organisations who object to tattoos, and act accordingly.
In a couple of generations, the 'young' of today will be in those positions, and the issue of tattoos being a problem will disappear.

"Does the tattoo actually say something about a person, or do people merely think it does?"
That's a difficult question as there is a scale that at some point yes it does actually say something about a person - surely this guy with his whole face and quite frankly very frightening (the blackened eye particularly) look tells us he some out of the norm issue with his own face previously. I just don't know where on that scale it becomes more than just thinking it does when it doesn't.

people with their whole faces tattooed are really very rare (I don't think I've ever seen one). The idea that Sam Cam might be unempoyable because of a dolphin on her ankle is bizarre, though for many it may be true.
As andy hughes says, this is a very recent change, over the course of a single generation or less, and many older people simply don't get it. By the time everyone my age has died, it may no longer be an issue. For those working in industries aimed mainly at young people, it already isn't.

Oh I think folk get it. A bunch of celebs decided it was cool and the masses simply followed.
It is still as primitive an act as it ever was, and undesirable for all the reasons stated here and in other past threads, but a rebellious younger generation are now trapped, having to either continue to claim it is great or have to admit that they had second thoughts and may have been wrong.
It's anyone's guess whether society returns to an attitude of more respect for their body in the future, or whether this is a longer term aberration and will return to a state where only a few, who wish to look hard, opt to have it.

Ludwig....the difficulty with this "fashion" is that its for keeps, unlike clothing, or some other frippery.
Our sexuality, race and physical ability is beyond our control....having these disfigurements done is entirely within his control, and therein lies the difference. He has made a conscious choice to look the way he has.
That is up to him.
The chap we were talking about yesterday is a rare sight....I personally have never seen one in the flesh, so to speak. He didn't have a butterfly on his ankle, nor a dolphin on his buttocks ( as far as we know ! ) Those are neither here nor there. What he has had done is a complete skin change.
The problem comes when he decides that he is bored with this new "fashion"
Unless you have an awful lot of money, and a very pain barrier, tattoos are, in effect, permanent. The reason that I and others are questioning his lifestyle choice is that he doesn't seem to have thought very far into the future.
If he really thought that this drastic disfigurement wasn't going to effect him in his future life, then that is his "lack of judgement " ....he has been naive to a huge degree.

there are tattoos. and then there are tattoos. some sensitively applied art, professionally rendered, shouldn't present a problem. on the other hand the words "love" and "hate" and the odd swastika, applied in the time-honoured adolescent fashion in a wobbly spidery hand using biro and safety pin - not in the same category at all, surely?

I could add 'Possibly not' - I've employed tattooed workers, there was some customer contact though not much - it didn't seem a problem.
