This was first revealed in his autobiogrphy.
He said he was attacked and pushed the man away and he fell into the canal. He then ran away. As a confession of murder, it is pretty feeble.

I would hope that the Police have something other 'evidence' (a body maybe) and not just what the guy said in his autobiography.
