Why do they do it? Because they are hard-wired to, it's in their DNA.

No paedophile ever looks in the mirror and says their reflection, "You are a dreadful human being and what you are doing is wrong ..." - that's not how human nature works.

I am pleased he has been caught, but I do have serious reservations about vigilante groups.

Hand in hand with the premise that no-one thinks of themselves as a bad person, similarly, no-one committing a crime does so with even the vaguest thought that they are going to be caught and punished for it.

That is what has always made the notion of capital punishment as a 'deterrent' such a nonsense.

No-one who has killed someone ever thought "I'd better not do this, I'll be executed if I am caught ... oh well ... what the hell ...".

People simply do not think that way.

The broad definition of a paedophile is someone who is attracted to pre-pubescent children, so 'liking young girls' is the same as in this instance, a someone who is attracted to a child who is past puberty, but has not reached the age of sexual maturity and consent.

donny - it's about puberty, so there's no actual age limit. People sometimes use "ephebophile" to describe those who like adolescents but it's rather a mouthful so it's not common currency.

I think jno is right - it's not a substitute for an adult relationship, it's about control and power and secrecy - some people find those things exciting.

Donny...to put it simply it's like a man (or a woman) finding me sexually attractive at the age of 8 or them finding me attractive at the age of 14. At 14 I had boobs, I had pubic hair...but I was a virgin.

Another child sex abuser correctly jailed, but yet again the 'Wail' is misusing the word 'pedophile' to generate extra outrage. A pedophile is specifically someone who has a sexual interest in prepubescent children. Legally it is not possible for sexual activity with a person over 13 to be classed as pedophilia.

As AH says, their desire is not conscious produced, it is part of how they are wired. Acting on the desire is a different issue though. Sad to go through life unable to ever be in an intimate situation you wish but no one can condone abuse with those too young to be coping with such things. It's what makes this particular abnormality unacceptable to society.

It's a pity the medical profession hasn't come up with an easy effective "cure" for this misplaced desire.
