Part of the joy of being a student is that you have more or less all essentials taken care of for you, which leaves you masses of free time.
In tandem with that free time is a still-maturing mind which will fixate on the most pointless, ludicrous and generally facile subjects and expand them to galaxy-sized seriousness.
This is why students get themselves into these situations - because other students have too much time on their hands, and lack the maturity to separate what is actually important and relevant, and what is not.
That's how you come up with a rule to ban someone because someone 'might be offended' - but hasn't been so far.
When they join the real world that the rest of us live in, they simply won't have time for this sort of stupidity - but for now, self-indulgence and self- importance are the default positions.
