however, this has perverted the early voting and the final days campaigning for both candidates. Should they declare this election null and void - can they constitutionally do it? Poor old DT in touching distance of the White House and possibly even touching distance of HC, not that her husband would be impressed by that.

I am not sure that the "I'm not a politician" thing will ultimately be enough for Trump.
There will be enough people who realise that if people rang their local clinic and ask for a doctor and the receptionist told them they've got a great person in who is in no way qualified to be a doctor, but he's a breath of fresh air, not everyone would be keen on making an appointment ...
