The prevailing mood among U.S. voters according to commentators, is that the electorate are sick of politicians per se, and this investigation - dropped though it is - will only increase the perception among voters that politicians are not to be trusted.

The strength that Donald Trump has played on is that he is not a politician.

So although in theory, this lack of evidence should switch the race back into Mrs Clinton's favour.

I am not sure that the "I'm not a politician" thing will ultimately be enough for Trump.
There will be enough people who realise that if people rang their local clinic and ask for a doctor and the receptionist told them they've got a great person in who is in no way qualified to be a doctor, but he's a breath of fresh air, not everyone would be keen on making an appointment ...
