If the disgusting lowlives weren't spitting they'd not get a bag over their stupid heads would they? Are the police supposed to just accept getting spat at?

Exactly TTT. Any of these could be HIV positive, so putting a hood on them is sensible protection for the police.
"If the disgusting lowlives weren't spitting they'd not get a bag over their stupid heads would they?"

How do you know that?

what are you talking about thechair? How do I know what?
So you believe that the hoods are used as a matter of routine whenever an arrest is made? Strange because I've been with quite a number of people who have been arrested and I have never once seen a hood used nor heard from them that one has been. I obviously associate with a better class of criminal.

They are, in fact, only used when an assessment is made that there is a clear risk that the officers will be spat at. If you have no history of spitting at officers and if you behave in a civilised manner when they have dealings with you a hood will not be used. Whether there is a risk of HIV or not is immaterial. It is no more acceptable to spit at somebody if you are perfectly healthy than if you are HIV positive.
as I mentioned before my oh worked with prisoners and was spat at several times ,horrible ,disgusting people could have given him all sorts of illnesses etc .so yes bag them .

No, the old bil, or anyone else in authority, should not be spat at.

As for the 'mental illness' side perhaps they should not be on the street if they dont know they should not spit at the authorities?
Just another instance of it doesn't matter what happens to the police, but we mustn't hurt the poor, misunderstood thugs or yobs !!
Maybe it would be easier/safer if police, prison officers and paramedics wore spit hoods when dealing with people they believe are likely to spit?

The danger of contracting HIV through saliva is extremely small - to the point of being negligible.

The virus is spread through the exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, semen and vaginal fluids, but not saliva.

Liberty have denounced the spit hoods as cruel but offer no explanation as to what a better alternative could be.

If someone is spitting at arresting officers, and refuses to stop, I see no problem with a hood being used.

Is it not a policemans right not to be spat at?
This is one of the disturbing cases regarding the use of spit hoods:
https://www.ipcc.gov.uk/news/ipcc-recommends-sussex-police-makes-improvements-after-11-year-old-disabled-girl-held-cells

As the report makes clear the girl was detained in police custody under the Mental Health Act on one occasion. I do not believe anyone of any age should be detained in a police cell under the MHA, they should be detained in an appropriate hospital or mental health facility with properly trained and qualified people.

Michael Brown, OBE is a highly respected long serving police officer who is committed to the proper care of the mentally ill during arrest and in custody and has this to say about this case:

Totally agree Sinderella.
One case HC.

Dealing with mentally ill people will always be an issue. Doesnt mean the Police or anyone else having to restrain should be spat at.
I agree, and so does Michael Brown. But not all detainees who become aggressive are 'disgusting lowlives'.
No, but i'll bet the vast majority are.
