If this wasn't patently true, I wouldn't have believed it.

If the judge didn't believe the "excuse" he should have jailed him.

Absolutely amazing mikey.

It is so bizarre, that one can only assume that he actually thought it WAS a doll. That is the only explanation....isn't it?
wow. It must be be ominous news for those who go round punching dolls.

What if he DID think it was a doll Sqad ? Why would he want to punch a doll, any more then a baby ?
I agree Sqad but ...

Finding him guilty, District Judge Sam Goozee dismissed Hardy's claim that he thought the child was a doll as "implausible".

Then the man should now be behind bars.
He said he punched what he thought was a doll....to lighten the mood?

Three women admiring a baby.....what mood needed lightening?
And.....how would punching a doll lighten a mood?

Scary man......
There's another man in Hull as reported in today's news who thought it would be OK to have sex with his partner whilst she was in labour despite her saying no!!

Will try and find the story!
sqad
I was thinking that - i.e. that perhaps he really did believe it was a doll and was trying to be 'funny'

Otherwise i can't believe that he would punch the baby .

Then again if the lady was his neighbour , why didn't he know that they had 2 children ?
\\\\ Why would he want to punch a doll, any more then a baby ?\\

no idea mikey.....a joke? playing?

Many times i have picked up the kids teddy bear and gave it a thumping to ....well irritate the kids........I think.

But why would he want to thump the baby? What would be his motive?
Then again if the lady was his neighbour , why didn't he know that they had 2 children ?

She wasn't his neighbour.
I do think that there are some people who do things, and when asked why, say 'I don't know ...' and are being absolutely truthful, it was not a conscious act and they have no reason for their behaviour.

That does not for one minute excuse this man's bizarre behaviour - I think part of his sentence should have included psychiatric referral.
Andy makes a good point......it is not uncommon for people to "do things" and have no idea what instigated it.

Even if he thought it was a doll, why would he punch it. He should have made sure whether it was a doll or a baby.

I have no time for these "don't knows"....... Divebuddy has it correct here.....this man should be in jail.
But I ask again:

What was his motive for punching a 5 day old baby in the face?

He must have thought it was a doll.
Yes good call divebuddy
But I ask again:

What was his motive for punching a 5 day old baby in the face?

He must have thought it was a doll.
Because he was a 'king brain-dead cretin.
He asked the sister if the baby was hers. I wouldn`t have thought he would have done that if he thought it was a real baby as she was only a child.
What kind of upbringing leads a 64 year old man to punch a baby?, tell me, how many 20 or 30 somethings go around punching babies?
