Meanwhile, the losing Democrat is mired in all sorts of dodgy deals with her foundation and the despicable Saudis etc. which are not in the interests of the American working classes at all.
So it seems that 'right' and 'left' are no longer valid terms, and 'populism' is simply an invented word which is attempting to replace and denigrate 'democracy'.

"right wing" is the term that the Liberal elite use when anything happens that they do not agree with. Left/Right is not adequate to describe what is happening across US and Europe. Trump would no doubt fall into the swivel eyed, knuckle dragging bracket for many but he also shows many traits of hard line socialism. What is happening in the US and Europe is the people are taking any chance to be anti establishment.

Don't you mean 'conservative'?
The Republicans have a right wing, but as a movement, they are conservative, not right wing, in the same way that the Tories are conservatives. There are some in the party who are on the right and some who are (traditionally) referred to as 'One Nation Tories'.
It's the same with the Republicans.
'Right wing' in US politics is the Christian Democrats.
The GOP (Republicans) have a conservative platform, with further foundations in economic liberalism, fiscal conservatism, and social conservatism.
Massive difference to being 'right wing'.

The terms originate in France, where the in seating of the ancien régime the aristocrats sat on the right, and the commoners sat on the left. So these terms evolved to mean so that right-wing politics refer to politics for aristocratic and royal interests, while left-wing politics refer to republicanism, socialism, and civil liberties.
In the Westminster Parliament, from the speaker's point of view, it remains the same.

Democracy is government by the people. The people’s wishes are respected with the majority prevailing when a conflict of views is evident.
“Populism” occurs when the majority view does not accord with that of the ruling elite and their noses are put out of joint.
“Right Wing Populism” occurs when, not only does the majority view not accord with that of ruling elite but the people also find ways, belatedly, to have their voices heard.
