"the issue is not about being a killjoy, or wanting people to be 'punished' - it is about the catastrophic incidents that can occur mid-flight which, at best, frighten innocent passengers, and at worst, cause violence and mayhem."

What is the number of catastrophic incidents that have occured thus far?
I could not find one.

there have not been any thus far.

Would you like to be on the plane that crashes after an incident like this, and then gets action taken?

I suggest not.

Nor would I - which is why I think a simple safety enforcement is a better option, than bowing to public opinion based purely on cultural practice.
Must agree with andy-hughes on this one, drinking alcohol, just like tobacco smoking should be banned both on aircraft and in airports.

It is a pity but as in most cases the majority is forced to suffer for the minority, that is life.

I like a drink along with most others, but if one cannot go without a drink for the period of air travel, then there is something wrong.
andy-hughes, your reference to people ‘needing’ a drink suggests that those who wish to drink whilst waiting for a flight are in some way dependent in some way upon alcohol. I am not. I do, however, enjoy a gin and tonic or two, or a couple of glasses of wine with a meal, and I don’t see why that should be denied me because other people don’t know when to stop. You're a non-drinker, and that's your choice, just as my choice is mine.
^In the circumstances a poor choice of words perhaps, but one too many 'in some way' there. ;o)

After a simple Google exercise, take your pick.

a bit like US gun laws: they think it's unreasonable that the pleasure of millions should be curbed because of the actions of a few. Britain thinks differently.

There are many who enjoy a cigarette or a cigar, but in some venues, they have had their enjoyment curtailed.

I am a non-smoker by the way.
Naomi - as I have said, we must agree to differ on this - but you can be safe in the knowledge that your view is that of the vast majority, and you will be able to continue to enjoy a drink.
As soon as the door close on an Aircraft the Captain has total authority as to what happens on his aircraft, he was right to do what he did.

Other airlines; perhaps they should ban the clown but that would need police and customs intervention as well.
aog, that’s a poor analogy. Smoking affects other people. Drinking alcohol in moderation doesn’t.
no deaths then in 100 years of commercial flight.

But we are not taking about drinking in moderation and like your own admission, that certainly effects other people as well.

It is not about deaths, but what it is about:

/// it is about the catastrophic incidents that can occur mid-flight which, at best, frighten innocent passengers, and at worst, cause violence and mayhem. ///
aog, but the ban on smoking has been imposed because no one is immune to the effects of smoking. I can honestly say that having taken hundreds of flights only once have I witnessed a worrying situation created by a drunk.
I'll just put this out there: "there are none so righteous as the newly converted".
I think this creep should be banned for life.

AOG, you're knocking you head here Mate, on day there will be an incident with some Izz head causing a plane to come down, I hope I'm not on the thing, it makes me wonder with the " Well it will not happen" comments on here, will they still believe it's ok to abuse cabin Staff, try to open the door when the planes comes down. Tar ra, smile when that happens.
^ I doubt it. In my experience drunks are not much of a threat to an aircraft. They tend to fall asleep eventually. Its the sober nutcases that you need to watch.
