an ancient tradition that just needs explaining to the modern audience?

or an unacceptably racist form of entertainment that needs consigning to history?

I am only joking too. It was obvious that your reference to cave paintings was not serious, and I have run with the joke.
It does seem to be fertile ground (pun intended) for misunderstanding.
The blackening up as a form of identity concealment is long forgotten (or not well known), and those from a foreign (in this case asian) culture can easily misinterpet it as mockery. Alittle education would solve this misunderstanding
For once, I agree with gromit. Morris-dancing is patently not racist (bit looney, so are many traditions) and an assault on it is an assault on (and total misunderstanding of) our cultural mores. Stringent education is probably the answer - but at the very least other cultures must be told that we shall not drop our traditions for their perceived 'hurt'. They need to grow up and learn about the culture of the country they inhabit.....or should 'melas' be banned by indigenous white British - of course not. Give and take on all sides.
It is amazing how we are supposed to bend over backwards to accept and understand the cultures of our 'visitors' but they dont seem to want to return the favour.

Perhaps another country better suited to their closed minds might be better for them to live in?
But it's not mocking black people. The tradition has nothing to do with race.

Would it not make more sense for everyone to be educated on what the tradition actually means, rather than calling for repatriation?

It would make more sense for those who seek racism wherever they go to get over themselves.
An ancient tradition that needs no explaining to the modern audience.
Perhaps in this 'modern' age coalminers (if there are any left) should be made to wash before coming to the surface.

Just so no one is offended you understand?

Sir Thomas Beecham is credited (possibly erroneously) with the quote - 'Try everything once except incest and folk dancing ...'

And it's not hard to see why he would say that!!
I certainly think that England, during the upcoming Six Nations rugby competition, should start their every match with a little light Morris dancing...like the Haka, you understand. The fluttery hankies and tinkly bells should put the fear of God into the opposing teams!
I like watching Morris dancers. They're jolly. :o)

Did the chap in the clip sound like he was up for a bit of education, sp?

I appreciate the history and cultural aspect of Morris dancing, but rather like watching people singing on Songs Of Praise - it makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I find it hard to find reason in that guff. I won't even begin to list other things you should not try.
Talbot - it's just a humorous remark, nothing to get het up about (again!)

And so was that before you launch off!!!!
Plenty for the permanently offended to pick on here. If they've a mind to.

I seem to remember you once saying that you enjoyed a little Hymn singing, alongside the 'present Mrs Hughes'.
