//Democracy comes from the Greek word 'demos', meaning 'the people'. 66 million PEOPLE voted for Clinton as opposed to only 63 million PEOPLE who voted for Trump. // Funny how that slant on things is not applied to the result in the UK referendum on Brexit. Different goggles used then.
I seem to recall, TTT, that when UKIP gathered 4 million votes in our last 'democratic' General Election but got only one candidate, you whinged like a good 'un!
You really need either to accept systems as they are or decry all of them! You really can't yawn at the faults of one and whine endlessly at those of another.
There is a major significant difference between the two. One concerns voting for a local representative in numerous separate areas, so votes from one area for a candidate has no influnce on another area's voting, and nor should it; whilst the other is everyone in the nation being asked to vote on an overall representative for the whole nation, so one person's vote ought not have a smaller weighting than another's.
jno the thread is not about the merits of election systems if you want to talk about those start your own thread. I'm debating the continued attempts to thwart democracy.
"Derail democracy, eh?"

Yes, I'm well aware that the US voting system is based on electoral colleges, but - given the figures above - in what way are they 'democratic'?
Are you saying that making use of an ammendment that is there to protect the nation and its citizens is undemocratic? OK...we don't know yet what kind of president Trump will be...but there's the "what if". Another president could have an injury, suffer dementia, threaten the safety of the nation in some way. That ammendment is there if needed...thankfully. It's democracy...get used to it.

pasta, no a valid use may arise but for now it's not meant to be used because you don't like the result.
Kromo, not true I have never complained about our system or the US regardless of how my favoured candidates fair.
Buenchico
Might it not be argued that the US electoral system actually managed to 'derail democracy' anyway, by allowing the candidate with fewer votes to win?
Democracy in America has been derailed a long, long time then.
