Nothing wrong with Michael Jackson being played by the heroically talent-free Joseph Fiennes (cf. 'Risen').

If Cate can play Bob, then I don't see any reason that Joe can mumble his way through his role as Michael.

This is what's known as 'stunt casting'.

It's designed to get people on Twitter (with nothing better to do with their time) spluttering their indignation...and get others to splutter their indignation at the original indignation.

Meanwhile, Rome burns...
But to answer the original question - it's never wrong for a white actor to play a black role whilst there are opportunities for black actors to shine.

This issue we have at the moment is that we have so few green-lit movies like 'Moonlight', 'Birth of a Nation' and (the astonishingly good) 'Hidden Fences', that when people see roles that could easily To taken by non-white actors, people tend to get miffed.

Difficult to get a seat at the table when all the chairs have been taken away.

(I mean...'Noah' for pity's sake).
Gah!

'Figures'!!!!
the Mail's side-by-side photos do rather suggest that Fiennes is too dark to play Jackson

However, they absolutely nailed the casting of Liz Taylor.

Channing is rarely ever less than awesome.

And if Whoopi Goldberg married Gérard Depardieu she'd be Mrs Whoopi Depardieu.

and if she married Peter Cushing she be Whoopi Cushing.

Dave.
Lol Webbo. If Beyoncé Knowles had married Roy Castle she would have been Mrs Beyoncé Castle.
Michael Jackson spent a fortune on skin lightening treatments. Just look at photos of him as a child compared to his later adult years!
When is this on? It should be good.
AOG - //What are your thoughts on the Black & White Minstrels? //

They are an absolute character study for the concept of 'of its time'.

There is an utterly pointless trend on TV now for current comedians born since 1980 to view clips from '70's TV shows and gasp in horror at how unreconstructed we all were back then.

Except we weren't - we were in our time, and so was our entertainment.

I, and I am sure you, viewed the B & W Minstrels as a Saturday prime time entertainment show, which is exactly what they were. No-one gasped in horror at what they were doing, any more than Victorians thought it was cruel to send little boys up chimneys.

Society moves on - values that were true then may not be true now, and the same will apply in another thirty years.

So to point and gasp in 2017 is as redundant as wondering how people could go and poke the loonies through the bars at Bedlam.

I hope this answers your question.

If you look as later photos of Michael Jackson it would be difficult for a 'Black Man' to portray him accurately. His skin was almost pure white and he had his nose remodelled to remove any hint of an 'afro caribbean look. In later life he simply did not look like a 'black man'.

"When Is It Not Wrong For A White Actor To Play The Role Of A Black Star"
...when the Daily Mail tells you it is/isn't?

In my opinion ...couldn't give a f. Nothing wrong with any colour or creed of anyone to be playing another colour or creed of another person no matter who the subject is. It's art.
It's been cancelled.

'Hamilton', however, the Broadway show with a cast of black actors playing the roles of the white founding fathers of America, continues unabated.

And for the decorative bow, now that it's all tied in knots:
