Ever since Blair gave GPs a big pay rise to do less, we have had crisis after crisis in hospital, especially A&E

"In fact the surgery does stay open late one night a week - but this only happened after GP pay went up." Mine did the opposite. It has never opened in the evenings and when they were all awarded silly money they closed for half a day on Thursdays.

// It’s an utter disgrace. GP practices should be run under a mandate from the Department of Health which stipulates hours of opening and services to be provided and all GPs should be salaried employees of the NHS. // NJ
just like the ccourts and judges
oops !
no not like the courts as they dont work anything like as efficiently
Judges are paid god knows how much
pensions guaranteed by act of parliament
Judges' pensions act I think
and lawyers on private fees
Isnt this another Corbyn moment - cap on earnings more than £138 k which just happens to be the amount Jerry C is getting
as for LindaP's inital point
GPs got a rise in 2000 and for the last eighteen months the A+Es which have nothing to do with GPs have been clogged, ergo .....
mus t be the non-sequitur so far of 2017
but hey hold it 3T hasnt posted yet!

Russell Hopkins strikes again - perhaps his daughter, a consultant surgeon, will write another letter as she did the last time.he gave his opinion..
" I read the letter from my father, Russell Hopkins, with some dismay. He has been out of clinical practice for so long that he is disconnected from the problems facing the profession today."

The hospital crisis has come about, not because people are turning up at A&E with minor problems, but because there is a bed shortage.
The NHS has a huge funding shortfall, in spite of 13% efficiency savings since 2010...

We have fewer beds, doctors, you name it, than most other developed countries

We are spending less on health…

And this one graph of number of beds versus admissions says it all - rising admissions and falling bed numbers.

So much easier to blame GPs/consultants rather than admit to a failure in government policy.

PP you know full well that it was the out of hours opt out, introduced by Blair and his cronies who value a vote more than they do a life. Opt out and lose about £5k per practice but have loads of time for private work.
Figures for the number manglers.
2004 New contracts signed. 14 million A&E admissions
2005/6.............................18 million A&E admissions
2009/10............................22million A&E admissions.
Now you can call it coincidence, but most wouldn't.

Oh and it's not the fault of the immigrants, rising cost pressures mainly come from other sources...

slaney......I wondered when the graphs, statistics and studies would arrive and i do respect your opinion.
ABers are not blaming the doctors entirely and i do agree that the Government has to play it;s part, BUT, the posters are mainly blaming ONE Government....the Tories and are stating that this "crisis " has occurred since we had a Conservative Government which in my opinion is totally untrue.
If one cannot get a GP, then one has to go to A&E.......what has that got to do with beds?

I agree Sqad, certainly not all problems due to the Conservative government, Labours track record was poor - rigid adherence to financial targets and PFI among other things.
A few facts don't hurt :)
I will not be ignoring you all but I have to go shortly and look after my 18 month granddaughter and she does not think much to this Internet thing.

//Togo, firstly, admissions to hospital are rising in most European hospitals, secondly, those admitted to hospital generally need specialist treatment not GP treatment. //
Not surprised, if you cant get a GP appointment for days a minor ailment is likely to become much more serious. Stop GPs signing on for agency emergency cover work at the weekends, and make sure they are not allowed to take private work with private clinics would get them to re focus. If they want the security of working for the NHS make them commit to it, not use it as a cover for their own avarice.
