It obviously looks increasingly likely that he'll never recover and though I'm speculating would guess he's in a PVS or near to it.
As ever in such tragic cases it's ironic that he faced danger so many times on the track yet suffers the tragedy of a head injury from an innocuous fall whilst ski-ing.
Very sad for all concerned.

“Do the family owe it to these fans to provide regular updates”
No
“…or should privacy be respected at all costs?”
Yes.
Mr Schumacher had retired. His accident was nothing to do with the sport that his fans followed (and even if it was I doubt my answer would be any different). Different families have different ways of dealing with the tragic situation in which they find themselves. The Schumacher clan has chosen privacy over details (and possibly photographs) of their loved one being plastered all over the papers (many of whom cannot be trusted to deal with such a matter sensitively). They don’t owe anything to anybody to do other than they please.

Not wrong at all. "The Public" have no right to know anything that the Schumacher family do not want to disclose, unless it breaks the law, in which case it may be in the public interest for it to be known. But the Schumachers have the right to privacy, and no one has the right to intrude on private matters.
C'Mon.....tragedy makes news........rapes, murders, mutilated bodies, air crash sites.......many, probably most people have a morbid interest in situations and particularly when it involves a celebrity.
