I saw this on CH4 News last night and it was horrific. Its a case of the Media, this time CH4, bringing it to our attention.
CH4 and the BBC get a lot of stick on here but thank God they are prepared to stick their necks out with investigations like this.
The Church of England wee left floundering as usual !

After all, the very organisations that allowed this to continue for so many years, are the same ones that we now entrust to keep our children safe.

/// A man that was entrusted by the CofE to look after the well-being of vulnerable young men, on behalf of the Church. ///
How on earth can you blame the CofE, can they be expected to know what goes off in such a mind?
No one can, even the Police the judicious system, or those responsible for Doctors etc, recruit bad eggs,
/// The CRB check has been mentioned in this thread. This check only finds out if there have been any previous convictions. As Smyth was careful not to get convicted, he was able to continue his abuse for many years. ///
/// In incidences like this, the CRB check is about as much use a chocolate teapot. ///
So what do you suggest then mikey, reading the leaves in a more solid teapot?

AOG - //How on earth can you blame the C of E, can they be expected to know what goes off in such a mind? //
In the same way you blame all Muslims for the actions of their deranged few.
If you switch 'C Of E' for 'Islam' and then apply your own thought processes, you'll see exactly how it's done - you do it on a daily basis.

Well let's ban the lot mikey, summer camps, youth clubs, sports tuition, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Girl Guides.
Much safer for our young to stay in doors, watching TV and playing video games.

"How on earth can you blame the CofE"
AOG....this man was very active within the CofE, so yes, I would expect that the Church to be more vigilant.
I would also not expect the Church to tell Smyth to "go abroad" after serious allegations were made, which is what happened.
The Church is up to its sticky armpits in this affair.
I was pointing out that the CRB check is useless to stop abuse by people that are not, as yet, on the radar.
Other organisations are much more pro-active in his affair....the Scouting movement for instance.

jourdain2 - //Andy-h - I was only trying to point out how seriously safeguarding is being taken these days. //
If you honestly believe that any pervert acting under the auspices of the church wastes a nanosecond thinking about 'how seriously the church is taking safeguarding' then you really don't have even a basic grasp of how these peoples' minds work.
They are about as likely to be deterred from their horrible practices as anyone on the basis that someone somewhere is taking their behaviour 'seriously' - that would be not at all.
// Not quite sure why the size of the Bible came into it, in any case the N.T. is not a huge book. //
I don't care if the New Testament - the bit of choice it seems, is the size of a pamphlet, it will still have been read, and ignored by the perverts who operate under the C of E umbrella.
My point is, it is still thicker than the 'safeguarding' doctrine to which you refer, which will not have been read at all.
To repeat my point - reading about 'safeguarding' is like reading the Bible - if you are a 'Christian' abuser, neither of them mean anything at all.

/// AOG....your post at 15:49 is well up there with previous childish post of yours. ///

Why not resort to your usual Labour mindset induced name calling, when you have lost the argument.
But I will cut you a little slack, any constructive solutions yet, on how we can keep our young safe?

Andy-h I quite understand your point about abusers not taking account of any writings - or speeches, or lectures - believe me when I say I really do know about this. All I am trying to explain is that the C of E as a whole takes the issue very seriously these days. We're all under an obligation to report anyone whose behaviour is suspect - not that I can believe than any decent person of whatever faith would fail to act on suspicions and try to protect the vulnerable.
jourdain - //No, I haven't, of course. I'm not an R.C. and anyone who would not act upon suspicions is not someone I would categorise as 'decent'. //
I appreciate your devotion to your faith, and your willingness to believe in the goodness of mankind.
As an atheist, I also believe in the goodness of mankind, but unlike you, I do not have to struggle to reconcile belief in a God that would allow one single innocent child to suffer abuse by adults who claim to believe in Him as well, and act in His name.

Mikey, //After all, the very organisations that allowed this to continue for so many years, are the same ones that we now entrust to keep our children safe.//
That’s precisely why people like this get away with it. If they belong to the church they’re automatically assumed to be trustworthy. Think of all those Roman Catholic priests.
andy-hughes, //so can we look forward to a similarly understanding perspective when crimes are carried out my Muslim fanatics//
I sincerely hope not. The church doesn’t teach what Islam teaches.

That question was aimed at AOG, but I don't anticipate a response - he is not talking to me, can't think why.

oh I am talking to everyone but are they listening
no matter
//How on earth can you blame the CofE,//
easy - it occurred on their watch.
Id child abuse occurs in a hospital for example - is it sufficient for the med director to bleat- "oh it is nothing to do with me I was off the ward at the time - in fact I have never been on it !"
[ yes I have been in a unit where an MD tried that in answer to another issue - he didnt last long ]
oh whilst we are it
can we go softly on organisations being immutable ?
The NHS of today is nothing like the NHS of 1948 or 1978 and the same can be said about social services or child safeguarding as it now is.
the same shot idea [they never change] could be said about the House of Commons - and how like it is to the first one that sat in English in 1360 -
well it isnt
