It was built in 1889 and was only intended to stand for 20 years, yet it has survived two World Wars and yet now in the year 2017, it has been decided that it needs protecting, just goes to show what dangerous times we now live in.

The EU has been dominated by Christian/Conservatives for decades. That well known leftie, John Major signed us up to the Masstrict treaty from which the Schengen Area developed (even though we opted out of that).

La Tour Eiffel is the biggest single rip-off in history. It is the most pointless structure ever built. Its sole purpose is to part tourists from their money. People in France wouldn't give it a second glance. I was told 30 years ago that the lift boys were on £30k p.a. even then. If it ever was destroyed in an attack I can imagine that most Parisians would give a resounding cheer.

Took my girlfriend to Paris last month to see the Tower. She remarked as we got closer that it was "smaller than I expected". (No jokes, please.)

There were already barriers up of a sort, which was a tad disappointing, but on the other hand at night it's lit up like a Christmas tree, so I am not sure I agree with JD that it's a waste of time.

OK, if you want to see it then go and see it, but don't go up it. That IS a waste of good money. Also, don't patronise the cafés in the area unless you're rolling in it.

Jackdaw33, I've been to the top many times - and to the cafes and restaurants in the area. Paris is one of my favourite cities.

people like going up to high viewpoints to see cities around them. Arguably, the one from the Tour Montparnasse is better because it's the only place in Paris where you can't see the Tour Montparnasse. Saying it's pointless doesn't mean it has no point - it means you've missed the point.

Not really, unless you want to avoid crowds. My main gripe about the Eiffel Tower is their extortionate charges.

The trouble is if you go on an organised tour then it's a case of "Today is Thursday, we go up the Eifel Tower". We frequently go to Switzerland and see tourist parties going up the Jungfraujoch in all sorts of weather and the cost of a trip up there makes the Eiffel Tower look cheap.
