Another well-known High Street name caught out paying illegal wages. You have to watch these companies like a hawk. Its not just the Usual Suspects like Sorts Direct that have been found guilty.

Mickey, I think you will find the vast majority of companies have that ethos, they just bury it. Islay, it is not easy for the MWSD to identify people being paid below minimum wage particularly as in the case of SD and Argos whereby it is the time to get through security that causes the money to fall below not a direct hourly rate. It usually is found during an...

It is a fact though, that some foreign workers are being exploited and penalised.
On the radio the other night there was a discussion on a similar topic, and a foreign speaking chap telephoned in to say that he worked in a posh London's West End restaurant and the fact that well-to-do diners would regularly hand over a £10 tip, but said the waiter, the staff were forced to hand all tips over to the management and failing to do so would mean their employment would be terminated.
I would assume that these workers are on less than the minimum wage, and would be grateful for a little extra cash, but no even after the restaurants have imposed a fixed service charge, they still want their hands on what should be their worker's 'cash on the side'.

/// AOG, Gromit's tongue was so firmly in his cheek its stuck there with that comment ///
Oh dear how very clever of you to notice that, when I missed it completely.
/// - nice to see you jump on it so quickly though - ///
Always quick to yell "Touche" me, but then I win most of the time.
/// did it send your spider senses tingling? ///
Ha, Ha, not in the least, since I do not happen to be a spider, but if I were, I wouldn't fancy a 'Black Widow' spider, such as the likes of you.

Some of the reported breaches recently were also understandable- some cases involved monthly paid staff who were paid an annual salary which seemed to be in line with the minimum wage but because they got the same pay in every month regardless of days worked some argued that although their pay exceeded minimum wage in shorter months such as February of 30 day months, they were not paid the hourly rate in months with more working days.
I can't help thinking that sometimes it is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.
Is it a deliberate attempt to pay below the legal minimum? or just them thinking that they have just about managed it, but 'other' practices, such as waiting to get searched or something, tips them over time?
Sports Direct as far as I could see was/is just a nasty company that didn't value its employees and thought they were all on the rob or something. There are plenty of companies you wouldn't really want to work for if you didn't have to but I think the majority are at least fair and some are good.
Sometimes it is a matter of clarification of how a particular 'law' is interpreted and sometimes they get it wrong. As long as they hold their hands up and admit it, put it right and pay retrospectively anyone who has been out of pocket that should be it.
If however they just keep digging a hole for themselves then they deserve all the vilification they get.
