Why should the 75+ not have to pay the TV licence? Does Sky or the other providers have free contracts for those over seventy-five?

The BBC is the Government's propaganda vehicles, so politicians will not change the way it is funded because they will lose their influence.
Some foolish Conservative politicians want to kill the BBC because they think that will give commercial opportunities to their friends the Murdochs and the Rothmeres. But most politicians (Commons and Lords) see the BBC as an asset to the country, and will not significantly threaten its existance.

The free licence for 75+ was an election bribe by Gordon Brown. It makes no sense now, but no Chancellor has the balls to scrap it. It is grossly unfair on the rest who pay for a licence, but we are stuck with it.

As some pensioners have more income than some young people then I think that it should only be free if your income is below a certain amount.

There is a finite amount of advertising money to around. If advertisers could, they would rather advertise on the BEEB than the very low audience that SKY attract.
Make the BBC financed by advertsing and you would instantly kill SKY, ITV, Channel 5, Virg... wait a minute, I am suddenly liking the idea.

If the output and quality of programming is compared to other "ITV" type stations, then the answer is obvious. Just mention David Attenborough !

His Programmes are great examples of Wildlife / Nature photography at it's best.
But for me his presentation is far too BBC, it's stuck in the 50's in my opinion and tedious to listen to.
