Theresa May is Prime Minister on exactly the same basis as Gordon Brown was, but do you remember the fuss from Tories when that happened? We even had some of their plonkers dressed up as brown bottles following him around to stress their point about his being a "bottler".
Brown was 'elected' because there was no one who wished to oppose him. Some no-hoper did challenge May, but soon withdrew, so she also was "in" by default.
The "Bottler" title clearly applies equally to her, having been chosen by a selection of Tory MPs only.

The election of someone unopposed is equally valid as that of someone who was opposed. Until the 50s it was not unusual for an MP to be returned unopposed; in my area many councillors were so returned. I mean, it would be a waste of good money to put up a Tory against Corbyn or Abbott.

The post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is a lot different from a council ward.

The fact she ended up being unopposed in her Party's leadership contest, and by default, the Prime Ministership, is indicative that no one else really wanted the job.
