As last night was Saturday night I imagine there were scores of serious assaults up and down the country (there are plenty on Sunday to Friday as well). I've not read about any of them but I'd be surprised if there were none other than the one mentioned here.
The one mentioned here hits the headlines because the allegation, so we're told, is that the victim was an asylum seeker. So what makes the assault on him more newsworthy than any of the others that almost certainly took place over the last couple of days?

Just a few weeks ago. A crime equally despicable (in fact more so because the victim died). Anyone remember seeing make top billing on the BBC national news? Anyone remember the local MP taking to Twitter calling the perpetrator "scum"? Anyone remember Diane Abbott getting out of her pram over it. Anyone remember the pensioner's death being linked to the rise in "hatred" of old people for having their pensions triple locked, thus causing economic problems? Me neither.
