You can never over-estimate the ability of humans to be cruel to other humans.
unbelievable, they should never see the light of day again in my view.
disgusting animals, they should be sent down for life, which of course won't happen.
Not just cruelty, it's downright depravity. But how can such ( can't call them people ) filth not expect to be caught ? Even if they expect their victim/s to die in the end, there will be bodies and evidence to be got rid of. Not just depraved but mindless too.

///Mr Baker was sentenced to 15 years in jail and a further five years on licence after his release///

Seeing as he's already in his 60's I guess that is pretty much a Life Sentence.
Richly deserved imo.
I read in another article that this poor woman was also raped and abused by his friends and rewarded with Quality Street chocolates if she'd been 'good'.

I can't understand why the wife got such a lenient sentence
hc
neither can i, the wife was just as guilty imo.
With regard to Atlanta's point about thinking ahead to this woman's death, body disposal etc., -

This presumes a level of ability to think ahead and see a bigger picture which is simply not there.

This couple are at the very least of seriously limited intelligence, and may well be suffering from mental health issues.

You cannot try and ascribe rational thought processes and behaviour to them, because their actions show that they are not capable of either.

It is possible that the wife was treated more leniently because she simply went along with what her husband did, and was unable to understand the consequences of her behaviour.

I am sure both will receive psychiatric evaluations, and possibly treatment during their incarcerations.
I feel so much sadness for their victim. What they did is beyond my comprehension.
What can one add? Except to say they should have both been given the same sentence, I mean 18 months for what she was also implicated in, is a joke.
All so easy to say that her husband was a "Svengali-type figure" who exercised great control over his wife, who was a "pawn doing his bidding".
She could have left at any time and reported him to the police.

pastafreak - It's beyond anyone's comprehension, I would suggest that includes the couple themselves.
AOG - //She could have left at any time and reported him to the police. //

That point suggests a level of independence and free will which I doubt this woman possessed.
Both sentences are far too low.

The victim herself was captive for eight years! Not to mention what she suffered while captive ...
I have to wonder...sadly not for the first time...how do some people grow up to believe that others do not have to be treated as fellow human beings should be expected to be treated? I find it totally unfathomable how anyone could behave this way to others or how people collude with the perpetrators. It makes me so sad that some grow up with no respect for others.
MallyJ - You almost always find that abusers were themselves abused, and it becomes a (literally) vicious circle.

Some children are raised without even the basics of courtesy, respect, care, love, empathy ,and so on, and they grow into damaged adults like this couple, and they carry on dealing with their own issues by perpetuating them on others.

I too, think the sentences were far too low, especially the one for the woman. I don't give the "Svengali-type figure" theory any credence whatsoever. The woman knew exactly what she was doing. She could have stopped doing what she did at any moment over the 8 years, but chose not to.
He should never see the light of day again and she should have been given a far greater sentence.

18 months for letting a woman go through that ... pathetic.
I don't regard them as 'animals', animals are far better than this, I regard them as disgusting pieces of human filth !! I hope this poor woman spends the rest of her life happily and loved, poor soul.
OMG...toss away the key !
Despicable and chilling, I don't feel the sentences sufficient in either case.
