Speaking as a bloke I find the whole thing disgusting , both parents and anyone who performs FGM should be prosecuted.

It's not unusual for women to perform this procedure. The West Midlands Police is against prosecuting the parents for FGM

Agreed, emmie - but prosecution is too late, also. Would a child who has suffered the horrors of FGM benefit from her parents being imprisoned?
Would the parents of a child who has had this procedure seek medical help for her at any time for any reason (eg meningitis) if they know they would be prosecuted when the mutilation is discovered?
Would a girl who had this done, her parents imprisoned, grow up feeling like a freak?

Sadly, the highest incidence of FGM being carried out in the Middle/Far East IS by women(and not qualified women at that)They are usually the "wise(huh)women" of the village.A few years ago a family (all born and bred in the UK) holidayed with their relations in a village in Libya. The Mother left her 12 year old daughter with the villagers, including her Grandmother, for the day. When she returned they had FGM'ed her daughter. The granny couldn't understand what the fuss was about.Tradition has a lot to answer for.
//if you love your child, how could you subject her to it. //
but that's the conundrum, isn't it? in a society that expects the practice, if you love your child how could you not do it? to give in to societies (like ours) that have "outlawed" (allegedly - I say that because there's virtually no will to prosecute) the practice is to deny your child a place in her own culture.
