Ii think you'll find in any case that Putin was busy with the KGB and the Stasi round about Berlin Wall time and the end of the DDR. I don't blame him for being miffed about the dissolution of his carefully assembled police state apparatus of course.
The idea that NATO is "advancing" on Russia is nonsense. It is true that countries close to the former Soviet Union have joined, but you can't rerally blame them. Look at the countries that have not joined: Moldova, Georgia - both divided and destabilised - and in the case of Georgia openly invaded - ditto Ukraine: invaded from the south and the east. But these incursions of course do not count ...

It's an exciting race in France, what with M Melenchon creeping up on the rails. The last poll showed only 3 per cent between the top 4 candidates.
Le Pen may actually have lost support to Melenchon, odd as it may seem. She has made a big drive for the working class vote, at the expense of many of the middle classes who might otherwise have been tempted.
One thing is sure: the next President's name will end in N :-)

I don't think one should take much notice of the polls. Like Brexit and Trump, a large number of the 'don't knows' actually do know, but are not keen on being public about it, what they mark in the ballot box is what counts.*

It's the problem Le Pen has: a very divisive figure will struggle to amass enough votes in a double-headed run-off. And France should be thankful for that as her policies would be catastrophic for it.
