Despite my republican leanings, I have considerable respect for the irascible old beggar - he's made a decent fist of an impossible job.

Just had a frantic phone call from my daughter who lives n Australia. She said it was announced in the middle of the night that there was going to be an announcement from Buckinghamshire Palace. It being the middle of the middle of the night in Oz they thought the Queen had died! I knew nothing about it till I switched on the news here . Good luck to hm. He's done a sterling job and deserves to step down.

I am not sure that anyone has 'abused' anyone on this thread.

I would also take issue with the notion that President Mandela and Tony Blair are 'terrorists' in the generally accepted sense of the word - and I can't recall anyone defending Blair on here for a very very long time.

Bit off topic but I always feel compelled to comment on Mandela. He fits the description of “terrorist” precisely. He played a leading role in an organisation which carried out the indiscriminate murders of civilians who could have had no influence on his cause. Fits the criterion in the same way as the 9/11 perpetrators and the bloke who drove the car across Westminster Bridge. The aims of his campaign may have been justified but the means it adopted most certainly were not.
