They're all in the main body of the story. The Daily Mail used that as the headline to generate clicks. Each page impression means advertising revenue.

If the headline read:

Police force ditches traditional bobbies helmets for cheaper and more comfortable US-style baseball caps

it's unlikely to have attracted so much attention from those who wish to express anger at political correctness.
SP, I'm not angry with political correctness - just bored with the 'precious' who continually shove it down everyone else's throat.
I like them - I think they look smart.

Perhaps the Daily Moan ran with the non-binary (stupid expression) part, because of the nine reasons mentioned, this one was sticking out like a great big fat absurd thumb.

/// I once almost decapitated a PC wearing an old style colonial helmet (accident truly) we made friends afterwards. ///

What do you mean, 'colonial helmet', surely it has no connection with that nasty, bad, British colonial rule?

Strange no one yet has took this up.

/// Earlier this year, Dyfed Powys Welsh force set up a 'Gender Identity Working Group' to make it more transgender friendly - with recommendations including making custody cells and toilets 'gender neutral' and ditching terms such as policeman and policewoman.
Police call handlers in the area will also be given language training so they do not offend people on the phone. ///

However this last piece is rather interesting, seeing there are many different languages now spoken in the UK, I wonder which languages will be taught?

Or perhaps I have got this wrong, and what they mean is, they will be taught not to swear at callers.

It's not strange that no-one has taken it up.

I think most people will understand the point of the training.

I understand - some newspapers play on that, and generate advertising revenue from it.

The police force in question aren't to blame here.
Aren't you ever sick of the "Anti-PC" brigade, who try to shove their outrage at possible, often wildly exaggerated, cases of political correctness down everyone's throats, as well?
Jim, if you're talking to me, I'm not outraged - and no, I'm not sick of the anti-PC brigade.

SP, it's not only the newspapers that play on it - and the police are at fault here for conceding to such nonsense.
I was talking to you, but about the Daily Mail headline -- which is, at the very least, misleading. Wouldn't it be better to encourage clarity?

Jim, the headline might be misleading, but I agree with Deskdiary at 00:36 Fri who said //this [reason] one was sticking out like a great big fat absurd thumb.//

Absurd is spot on. That reason shouldn't be on the list at all.
Why should it not be?

I agree that if it were the *primary* reason for such a change then it's a bit off, because the first concern for police officers should be safety. But if that's not compromised in any way, isn't it generally beneficial to ensure that the recruitment pool for Police Officers is as large as possible? Something that discourages, or could discourage, a subsection of the population from ever wanting to apply is something worth ditching if it's simply an "optional extra".

As to whether or not it will be effective in increasing recruitment among trans* people, who can say? But if it does, then I'd regard that as a benefit; and, if it does not, then no harm done.
naomi24

Perhaps we should read the whole article before deciding.

There are nine reasons given for this uniform change.

One of them is a positive move for transgender people.

People shouldn't concentrate on that in order to give ourselves a nice warm feeling of annoyance.

You are a million percent correct.

Some people like to indulge in a bit of virtue signalling when it comes to (what they see as) 'political correctness'.

Fact is, the Daily Mail knows how to wind people up. It's brilliant at it.
A ridiculous typo on my part - 'Custodian Helmet'.

Sorry.

It is not that easy getting into the police 'force' (sorry wrong PC term again) 'service', given the reduction in numbers etc.

So if vacancies do become available then they should take on the most suitable applicants, regardless of gender identity or skin colour etc.

That's okay Mam, I guessed that, but just thought it needed to be pointed out, so as to prevent any misunderstanding you understand?
AOG

So if vacancies do become available then they should take on the most suitable applicants, regardless of gender identity or skin colour etc.

And the good news is that now that all the Gene Hunts hav retired from the force, that's a lot more likely to happen.
I understand only too well AOG, thank you for your correction.

I wasn't referring to you Mam, there are others on site who might have misunderstood your "ridiculous typo".
