Should we be concerned by Merkel's comments and can we afford poor relations at a difficult time for Europe?

No. The EU countries needs good relationships with the rest of the world just as much as the rest of the world needs good relationships with the EU countries. She's just miffed and striking out verbally because the German Union has taken the odd knock of late. Trying to get the subregions to want to band together for a feeling of safety/security. She's going to rattle neither the US nor the UK.
The rhetoric from the UK seems to be very combative from our end, constantly talking as if the EU are determined to impose a punitive deal on us and so on. So in that sense Merkel's response seems rather natural.

Perhaps we should be concerned because of what it says about the direction we're headed.
The noises from EU officials suggest a punitive deal is exactly what they are going for, in order to dissuade others from considering doing the same as the UK.

I think she must be 'losing it' to some extent. We have never said that we would not be close allies, supporters and friends of European states - just that we don't want to be part of the EU. Can't she understand that? It appears not. The hard language from our side is in response to the ridiculously punitive language from their side and she must know that. Can we all draw breath, please, no-one wants to be an enemy of a European nation. She's probably upset by Trump 'telling it like it is'.
She'll think twice, we need not be to concerned.

If she means that neither the UK or USA can be relied on to do what the EU wants, she's right, but that's nothing new, especially in America's case.

I think she proved that some time ago over the migrant crisis...

It doesn't really go well with the 'strong and stable' mantra!

Mrs Murkhell must be thinking of German rearmament then. Sorted,
and the answer is .... more integration

altho I was a remainer - I thought oo er Frau and have become a be-liever ( good huh ?)
So, Mrs Muckle has security "concerns" regarding the requirement to facilitate more integration. Well, well who'd "o" fought.
Well we have the US president having a pissing could test with the French president over who's hand shake is more manly and Angela Merkel feels left out. All she has is words and sometimes words are more cutting that handshakes lol

Her remarks are nothing more than a rallying cry to the remaining EU nations to get their support for the EU army and ever closer integration.

Sometimes these stupid remarks should be called out by (whichever) person/country/organisation etc they are aimed at.

Perhaps Trump and May should stand up at the next meeting/press conference and ask in what way will the EU not be able to rely on them? Give examples. Call them out to account for what they say. To do otherwise will be seen as her telling the truth.
//Her remarks are nothing more than a rallying cry to the remaining EU nations to get their support for the EU army and ever closer integration.//

An army dominated and paid for by.............Germany. Then everyone in Europe can be "integrated" into a new and exciting organisation, perhaps they will call it a Reich.
The US and UK are no longer reliable allies of mainland Europe, I'm amazed anyone thinks that they are, you lot voted for Brexit and seem to think everyone will still love us- how naive. And Jackdaw- that is a disgusting image, not relevant to the discussion, that you have posted and I have reported it.

Kval - hello! Not seen you around for ages, mind you I couldn't use this site myself for a while.

You feel that Brexit is going to be very damaging to us then?
//think everyone will still love us-//

Haha "still love us" now that is naïve. What they "love" is the dosh that they defraud us out of, to pay for their largesse. The Yanks have been propping up NATO and paying for the "protection" of Europe for decades, closely followed in the contributions league by GB. Perhaps someone can explain what responsibilities the Yanks and Britain actually have for mainland Europe. I thought it had disappeared with the German "threat".
