Why on earth shouldn't these boys school allow them to wear shorts in this very hot weather.

When I was younger, most boys of this age still wore shorts, so why is the Head teacher, being so ruddy obdurate ?

Sqad...some common sense would to be in order here.

In 1976, I shared a flat with a chap worked as a teller for NatWest Bank. The heat that year went on and on with no respite in sight. About mid July, his boss eventually allowed him and other men working at the Branch, to take their waistcoats off, provided they kept their jackets on, and yet the female staff were able to keep cool in short-sleeve blouses and skirts/dresses.

All it would take to please these boys and keep them relatively cool, would be for the Head Mistress to use some much-needed common sense. But it would seem that she is more concerned about appearances, than keeping people cool.
The young alba's primary school has 2 different dress codes, well, 4 if you include both sexes.
Summer dress for girls, shorts and polo shirt for boys.
Similar when they went to High School
Uniforms (including suits) are archaic anyway- only really necessary in places like the Armed forces and healthcare. At my son's secondary school they have had to wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and blazers all through the recent heatwave. Just teaching people to judge on appearances imo.

And very smart they must have looked as well Alba....not to mention cooler and less stressful.
...and ties. You can't really compare it to women though, mikey. At least we don't walk around topless at the first sign of sun :-)
Shall we do a protest, alba? ;-)
mikey......it has nothing to do with common sense.
These are the rules which are clear before entry and if you don't like them, then take your son/daughter elsewhere.
My son's knew the rules of the house and as far as I'm aware respected them. Common sense.....rules........different things, but rules state categorically the status quo......common sense is open to interpretation.
LOL Pix, why does the term Sticky Boobs spring to mind?
(Sorry Mikey xx)

The children were comfortable, if any wanted to wear shirt/blouse and tie, then that was fine too.

Pixie...may I assure you that I never walk around topless in public, ever, come sun or rain.....the shock to the general public would be too great !
The majority of the schools have a uniform here- there isn't a huge lot of choice.
That's slightly disappointing, mikey ;-)
You should see mikey's boobs, Pixie - you gals will be sending him your old bras.....
Well, he can come on our topless protest March then... that's three of us. And some talc.
aah, does Mikey need an over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder?
Bless x

I will walk tall and try not to stumble whilst holding high my bottle of talc.

'Freedom! or should that be freed 'em?

Sqad....with greatest of respect, the Head Teacher is showing a distinct lack of common sense, by not relaxing these rules, when it would be appropriate to do so.

And I would suggest that a system of rules, not flexible enough to cope with differing circumstances deserve to be challenged, which is what these boys are doing.

Living where you do, I expect you have got used to excessive heat. But until this morning, it was 30 to 34 degrees in southern Britain, which is exceptional.

If the Head had used some of this common sense that you disparage so much, and allowed some temporary relaxation of these very strict rules, the pupils would have been more comfortable and the School would not have been thrust into the limelight.

As I have said, these boys have my support, and if I was the father of any of them, I would be calling into question the ability of the Head on this issue.

Actually, Ms Mitchel would seem to have seen the error of her ways, because, to quote the BBC link,

"However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future."
Shorts were banned at our sixth form- so we all wore them until they changed their minds.
Ms?! Ms?!
oh please, do not get me started on that stupid, flagrantly silly piece of nonsense.
mikey....clearly we disagree.
Any changes or rules should be discussed by the Board of Governors, not a load of teenagers presenting a protest in skirts.
Question Author
pixie....sorry but not disappointing at all. I am the sort of shape, that if I were to disrobe on a public beach, people would gather together, to push me back out to sea !
Mikey, sounds like you are a cuddly man xx
