Now that authorities are realising that tower blocks are dangerous places to be living in & hundreds of people are going to have to be rehoused, the truth is at last emerging about the faulty Thatcher plan regarding people being encouraged to buy their council houses. Councils were not allowed to re invest the money from house sales to re build council houses which of course resulted in a grave shortage of council properties which of course are now desperately needed. In retrospect now very short sighted.
Can someone please explain why this tragedy should not be treated as a political issue?
Was it not local and national politicians who drew up safety codes?
Is it not down to local and national housing policy which determine funding for the fire service, and are the conditions of social housing directly affected by government policy?
So please tell me - why is this not a political issue?
the regs were set up by political means but they have been bypassed by bribery and corruption. You cannot possible blame those who established the rules unless those are themselves to blame.
using the word "murder" in its legal context implies malice aforethought. is Mr McDonnell really saying that it was tory policy to kill people? really?
this tragedy is not political and no points are to be gained,,lots of mistakes though mainly due to standards not being checked regarding suitability of materials used..hardly the fault of TM... NO government would want to be the cause of this ..and no government is...and I agree with Togo's earlier comments
I don't agree with McDonnell, in that people were murdered.
But those people have been let down badly by successive politicians, of both sides, over many years. That includes local politicians, as well as Westminster.
The Enquiry will come to its conclusion, although we will probably have to wait for years for that.
