I don't think he is basing his dislike of Donald Trump from a religious point of view - more that Trump is a thoroughly horrible man.

We all have an opinion of everyone and everything else and have a right to say it (as long as it doesn't incite .. that sort of thing).

However when is office, for any public role they have to be very careful what they say and how they say it.

There are a lot of non Muslim people who object to the travel ban and there are a lot of Muslims who do as well.

The question is should 'the office' of mayor of London say it or not. And if yes how carefully.

Britain are missing a massive opportunity in not welcoming Donald Trump to the UK. Look at the success of the Trump visit to France- Macron has the nous to look beyond the fact that he Trump is personally distasteful and treated him to the full works, lunch in the Eiffel Tower, military parades etc including the regalia and pomp of Bastile Day. By the end of it, Trump went home liking a country he knew little of before, more positive about the performance of a key ally, more likely to consult them in future international decisions and even more likely to keep an open mind on climate change.

To all of those in this country who have bleated and protested about Theresa May’s invitation to Trump to make a state visit to Britain, the benefits of Macron’s manoeuvre are plain to see. By boycotting the Trump visit, Britain are missing a trick, and an unpleasant and self-important little man like Sadiq Khan should not be allow his personal prejudices to stop Britain from wooing the USA and showing some respect to the people of the USA.

Grow up, Trump haters, and see the big picture here!

Macron has recently aired some views that would have had Trump haters coughing up blood had those views come from Trump's and not Macron's mouth.

Khan has no power to ban Trump, so he is just stating his personal opinion that we should not waste any money on a visit.
Trump is a divisive figure, so the bill for policing a state visit would be significant. Money that could be better spent on nurses pay.

I don't think it's down to religion. I know Christians, Muslims, athiests and Hindus who all think he's a jerk and not welcome here.

The problem is - the man and the role are tied up together. There have been Presidents whose policies I've disagreed with (the Bushes primarily), but I never felt that they brought the role into disrepute.

Think of it this way - even though you may have respect for the royal family, it would be totally understandable if when meeting Prince Andrew you refused to bow - because he has done nothing to garner respect in the past couple of decades.

Trump is like that to many, many, many, many people.

Have you seen his approval ratings in the U.S.?

So, it's not just Khan.

It's loads of us.

If Mr Trump is invited to the UK it will be either the Queen or the Prime Minister who makes the invitation. Neither of them should be particularly bothered what Mt Khan thinks about the visit as the red carpet he suggests will not be rolled out is not in his cupboard under the stairs in City Hall.

Whatever people in this country think of him is neither here nor there. He has been properly elected as the President of the USA and is thus their Head of State. To suggest he is not welcome because some among our electorate do not like him would be the same as the Queen being unwelcome in the USA because some there do not like her.

I also am sure it is simply that Trump is an unpleasant ,unpopular and disagreeable President. Nothing to do with the travel ban.

It would amuse me no end, if Khan decided/wanted to go to the USA for a holiday, and his Visa was refused.
