what, fentanyl or heroin?
Question Author
either but read the first word of the title jno. Obtuse even for you.

Natural Selection?
Because they foolishly and blindly trust that they'll get the extra hit without the lethal dose of the fentanyl - Russian Roulette is the constant game of a drug addict.
Because some people are stupid, that is why.
I asked because the answers are different depending on which drug you're talking about.

In short: they take heroin for the rush, and they think it won't kill them, and it mostly doesn't. And they mostly take fentanyl without even knowing about it. Dealers cut it because fentanyl's cheaper than the drugs people think they're buying.

There's a Canadian story about it here, but I imagine it's much the same in the UK

Most class A drug taking is down to an addiction. This is just another drug users will think gives them a better high. Remember their minds are most likely addled.
As said they did not knowingly take fentanyl it was a contaminate in the heroin . Dealers will use any suitable looking substance to cut or dilute their drugs so as to increase the profit. That is one good reason for making drugs legal, legal drugs would be safer as they would be subject to the same purity checks as prescribed drugs.
Eddie....the debate about making drugs legal has been going the rounds for many years.

But just how would you make something as dangerous as heroin legal ? Would you just be able to pick a packet of heroin in the shop every morning, along with your daily newspaper ?
I would expect it to only be available on prescription and only allowed to be used under supervision as happens in some countries already.
I would however allow Marijuana to be sold in shops as tobacco is now.
That would have another advantage and stop the present situation where the same drug dealers sell 'weed' as well as class A drugs.
This means there would not be the temptation for a dealer to offer a marijuana user the chance to 'try something different' so as to increase the sales of the more profitable class A stuff.
You'd still have the underground market then, Eddie. A non- addicted recreational drug user wouldn't go to a pharmacy to have a shot of whatever under supervision. They'd want to relax with friends or at a party while they took it. So it would still go on.
Eddie...isn't that effectively what happens at the moment ?

There is a woman who will be queuing up outside the Chemist here in my village, and will admitted a few mins before it officially opens. She will then take her methadone, under supervision of the Pharmacist, and leave.
Yes mikey I know that happens, only a few pharmacies are allowed to keep a stock of methadone.
Cloverjo the point is that once heroin or cocaine was available free of charge on prescription there would be no incentive to illegally import it and risk a long prison sentence. Again it would eliminate the risk that a non addict would decide to try a class A drug , there would be no 'relaxing at a party' as the drug would only be available under supervision. The underground market would have been eliminated by the fact that the drug was available free of charge on prescription.

No jno, it was obvious you asked because you were being your usual obtuse self. You cannot resist trolling can you? it was obvious what I was talking about, this new deadly drug the first word in the article in Bold.
So in your scenario, Eddie, we'd go to a pharmacy to get our stash of heroin or cocaine. We'd have to ingest it in the shop right then? Or would we be allowed to take it home and share with friends? People will still want to take drugs, but not under the eye of a pharmacist. The black market would continue.
Eddie,.......the problem I can see about making heroin available free on prescription is the great danger of it spreading out into the non-addict population.

In the example that I gave, of the lady in the village, who has just had her daily fix, there is no danger of the dosage being misused, which presumably is why it has to be taken under supervision, and isn't allowed to be carried home. The burden on the NHS, to take over the activities of the drugs industry doesn't even bear thinking about

Secondly, I have my doubts about how other drugs would be made legal. Take cannabis for instance. I am told that the most popular way of using this drug is to put it into a cigarette, along with tobacco and smoke it.

So we could see a situation where existing tobacco companies would be in a position to sell cannabis cigarettes, rather in the way that they sell ordinary cigarettes at present.

Considering the essentially duplicitous nature of the tobacco industry, I wouldn't trust that industry one inch.
It always worries me when I have to stick fentanyl patches on my clients for pain relief, I never liked or trusted it.
Ratter.....I have just looked up Fentanyl Patches, and I hadn't realised that they were so widely used ::::

Either
The first word

Make up your mind. Anyway, you've had your answer to both and a link for further reading. The article first refers to "the painkiller fentanyl" but that's misleading. Few people are taking it as a painkiller, and few people realise they're taking it at all.
