Personally I welcome it for the environmental reasons as well as the fact that they are mostly unnecessary. We need to get stricter with enforcing speed limits outside schools etc.

Bu,t long before we had speed bumps, I don't remember the Police being very good at catching speeding motorists, do you ?
Speed bumps work. As regards the damage done to cars, if you negotiate speed bumps slowly and carefully, then there should be very little, if any damage to your car. Damage occurs when you try to drive too fast over them.

Yes. I wonder ... do you drive?
> My road is on a hill as well, so if you hit one awkwardly in the way down, the car soon becomes out of control !
Presumably the reason speed bumps are on your road is to protect the safety of, for example, pedestrians. So having "out of control" cars in that area is not a good thing.
For other ideas there is a multitude of resources available on the web, most of which don't involve deliberately damaging the road surface for all drivers including emergency vehicles, or creating situations in built up areas where vehicles are "out of control". Start here:

Yes, Ellipsis.....I do drive, about 18,000 miles pa.
I seem to have caused some confusion with the speed bumps on my road. It is on a hill, and people used to speed down the hill, rather more than speed up it. But if you DO drive too fast, over the speed bumps, on the way, then you run a danger of hitting your front valence.
But since the bumps have been fitted, cars travel much more slowly than before. There are lots of kids living on the road, and people now feel much more secure.
The speed bumps were fitted after a long campaign by the residents, and a local Councillor.

Speed bumps are totally useless as, if you watch the drivers they all speed up between each hump. The best solution ,and we have a lot, are the chicanes. No damage to vehicles and drivers seem to be quite happy to give way. The piece jutting out into the road helps pedestrians to cross safely as well and pedestrian lights aren't needed.
Speed bumps *might* have a place on 'estate roads', where traffic should be at walking pace to protect children (and idiot adults) who don't recognise the dangers of traffic.
They have no place on any 'through road' where people can expect to drive at the posted speed limit, if the road is clear of hazards.
Any speed bump on these roads which requires cars to slow down to walking pace to circumvent it is just wrong - if the limit is too high then change the limit, don't impose a de facto lower one by means of humpage.
As has already been said, there are many other ways of reducing speeds to legal levels - without burgering up my suspension.

Actually I have a simple test for any speed bump - make the Chief Executive of the installing authority drive over it 20 times in succession at the legal speed limit in his/her own car, with no-one else paying for any damage that may occur.
Then and only then will I accept that it is an appropriate traffic calming measure.

Thanks for the support hereiam and garaman, but as you know the usual reply to hard facts which blew away the opposition is to feign ignorance, claim the sources and studies are from "Shady" sources alter their answers or call them a troll, retard and threaten them with suspension! I weren't lolling before but am lolling now :)
Any feedback from the studies anyone???
