I know this can't be compared to a child be abducted but when I was on holiday earlier this year I watched people leaving their handbags, laptops, tablets unattended. They'd never do that in the UK.
It's like a holiday brain and they think nothing bad is going to happen.

I'm just waiting for Anne to post proof that Madeleine is dead, since she seems to know more than the parents, police and general public put together.

She may be with someone else entirely- but it should be up to her and what is in her best interests. Not just an automatic return. She must be about 14 by now- she is the same age as my youngest- and would probably have forgotten her parents by now too. Taking her away (for a second time...) from everyone she knows and loves, may not be in her interests.
